Fulton Science Academy
INNOVATION, EXCELLENCE, CHARACTER
WEEKLY NEWSLETTER October 3, 2016
Hello, Fellow Mustangs...
What a month! I would like to congratulate our wonderful students, our faculty, and our parents for raising $8,045.87 for pediatric cancer research during September. Through this experience, our students achieved something that no other student group has achieved in our school's 15-year history. The success of this campaign resulted from a variety of fundraising activities - lemonade stands, book sales, baked good sales and, yes, we are told that many students even sacrificed their own allowance to support this important cause and help other children in need!
Our school's character themes for the month of September included care, compassion, and kindness. Once again, our students demonstrated that they are both successful academically AND are great human beings with huge and caring hearts. Well done, children...we are so proud of you!
I would like to offer a very special thanks to our wonderful Mustang Support Organization Parent Committee members including Mrs. Aimee Nobile (Event Chair), Mrs. Sandra Cornejo, Mrs. Kisha Clark, Mrs. Tamara Stevens, Mr. Kris Kersey, Mrs. Sonia Quattlebaum, and Mrs. Juliet Sukkert. I would also like to thank our Director of Advancement, Mrs. Megan Bowman, for coordinating this charitable initiative in such an innovative and inspiring way. Not only did it benefit our students and a wonderful charity, but it also included our broader community.
Please enjoy videos and pictures below that reflect your amazing children at work.
Gratefully,
Kenan Sener

Fulton County Commissioner, Bob Ellis, Visits FSA Campus
Commissioner Ellis had heard rumblings of the school's "Coins for a Cure" fundraiser and wanted to show his support of the student's efforts. Touring the building for almost an hour, he concluded his visit by meeting several students and congratulating them on their studies and their efforts to help raise money for pediatric cancer research.
After his visit, Commissioner Ellis followed up via email with the following well wishes. "Thanks to all of you for extending the invitation to visit Fulton Science Academy. I was truly blown away by the beauty of your school and to see what is being done. You should be very proud of the success that you've had over the past five years as a private school. It was great to see the enthusiasm of the students, their engagement in a meaningful cause, and their focus on giving back."
As a result of the visit, plans are now being made for a personalized tour for students at the Johns Creek Environmental Campus. According to Commissioner Ellis, "It's a beautiful facility and the process of wastewater treatment and advancement in technology around it is pretty interesting. We would love to have the students visit."
Thank you, Commissioner Ellis, for spending time with us last week and encouraging our students in such a meaningful way!

New Teacher Resource for Elementary Reading
FSA’s Elementary teachers have a new resource to enhance reading instruction. The school recently purchased 237 titles of leveled reader books.
Unlike the Media Center where books are sorted by author and subject, the leveled reader books are sorted by levels of difficulty from easy books for emergent readers to longer books for proficient readers.
Books cover all genres and subjects including fiction, non-fiction, and biographies. Each title has six copies, all contained in one easy, grab-and-go bag. This allows teachers to select materials to read with their students in small groups at a level that is challenging, yet still manageable for students.
“Having the books sorted by reading level makes it so easy to select appropriate books,” said second grade leacher, Ms. Przedpelski. "As the school grows, so will the leveled reader library as we add more and more books each year."
Many thanks to Mrs. Campbell, vice principal, who sorted the books by reading level and Alisha Moore, a dedicated parent volunteer, who labeled all of the books.

Elementary Coding Club
Coding club students create different mobile apps for android devices every Wednesday using MIT App Inventor and they got really excited when they started running them on mobile devices.
Here are a few examples from coding club projects: Animal soundboard, paint pot, calculator.
MIT App Inventor (http://appinventor.mit.edu/ ) is an innovative beginner's introduction to programming and app creation that transforms the complex language of text-based coding into visual, drag-and-drop building blocks. The simple graphical interface grants even an inexperienced novice the ability to create a basic, fully functional app within an hour or less.

Faculty Shows College Spirit
This past Tuesday FSA’s faculty and staff celebrated College Spirit Day by wearing attire representing their Alma Mater. The purpose of the day was to inspire students, but in addition to that, it helped spark many conversations among staff members and helped them get to know one another a bit. Here are some photos of the day.
Adventures in reading - K AND 3RD GRADE Buddy Up

FSA Home Visits Information
FSA home visits offer a unique experience for both our teachers and families. If you haven't yet registered, we encourage you to please consider it.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
So far, home visits have been very well received. We thank everyone who has made this program such a special and successful part of FSA.

The Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving academically gifted and talented youth. As a world leader in gifted and talented education, Duke TIP works with students, their families, and educators to identify, recognize, challenge, engage, and help students reach their highest potential.
Each year, the 7th Grade Talent Search helps educators and families determine how advanced their students' abilities truly are and what level of educational challenge is appropriate.
As a part of their talent search enrollment, Duke TIP will register eligible 7th graders to take either the ACT (no writing) or SAT as an above level testing experience. This allows students to have greater insight into their abilities and a chance to preview the test they will take during the college admissions process. The program also provides students with valuable benefits and resources designed specifically for academically talented youth.

FSA's A-Z Directory Needs Your Input
Hello, parents!
I'm writing to ask that you please check your email for information concerning the A to Z directory. This service is being provided by the school's Mustang Support Organization and provides immediate access to our student and family information.
To ensure this service is fully functional, please log into the A-Z Directories using information sent to you previously via email and verify your contact information. All data verification needs to occur prior to Sept 29th.
An email was sent to you earlier from the Mustang Support Organization with details about how to register. Please check your email to retrieve this email if necessary.
MSO Activity Fees Now Due
The A-Z Directory, along with many other programs and services coordinated by the MSO, helps our school enjoy the quick rewards of modern technology.
With that said, our ability to provide services such as these that are not included in your child's tuition hinges upon every family paying their child's mandatory MSO fee. This fee is $100 per student for the entire school year.
If you have not yet paid your child's activity fee, please do so. These funds are critical in providing many services and opportunities for our students. If you have already paid, thank you!
As always, please direct questions and comments to me directly. Checks can be delivered to the front office made out to the "Mustang Support Organization." You can also pay online by clicking here and marking "MSO" in the purpose area.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Amanda Crigler
Please Help Create our FSA Song
Dear FSA Students, Parents, and Faculty:
It has come to my attention that our school would benefit from an official school-wide "saying/school song” – an Alma Mater!
I would love to write a musical piece that corresponds with a meaningful message that the FSA family will appreciate. We also want to create a song that students will be able to recall for many years to come!
I seek the creativity of the entire FSA community in this endeavor, please. Whether you’re a talented songwriter, a poet, a creative writer, or a simple doodler, I would love to see your work and encourage you to please share your thoughts and feedback with me.
Moving forward, we are looking for your thoughts and experiences about our school, ideally written in a poetic form. For example, what does FSA stand for? Why are we proud to be here? Why do we do what we do at FSA? What are our goals? Where do we see our future?
Togetherness, hard work, perseverance…Can you sing STEAM? These are a few starting points to get you thinking.
As an example, I’ve attached an mp3 and a pdf file below with a few words I came up with to get you warmed up for the challenge. Please feel free to sing along!
Please send all words of art to: ehawk@fultoncienceacademy.org and we’ll go from there. A collaboration between artists is really fun and reaps great personal reward.
Additionally, the author of the selected submission(s) will be awarded with a $250 cash prize.
Your contributions are paving the way for a brighter musical future here at FSA. Thank you for your ongoing support of our school. We appreciate you greatly!

PSAT Details - October 19
FSA will offer an administration of the PSAT/NMSQT exam at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19th. This test will be eligible for all 8th, 9th, and 10th graders, but PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED!
The PSAT/NMSQT® (or Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is, as the title suggests, a preliminary version of the SAT. Not only does the PSAT help prepare students to take the SAT or ACT, the great thing about the PSAT/NMSQT is that a high score can also open the door to National Merit Scholarships and other awards. (Please note that only juniors are eligible for the National Merit Scholarship.)
The PSAT/NMSQ is approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, so students will miss their first few periods of the day. The testing location will be at FSA, in the gym, and will begin promptly at 8 a.m. All students must be in the gym by 8 a.m. Once testing begins, students will not be permitted to enter the testing room late.
ALL students who sign up to take the PSAT/NMSQT will be required to attend a pre-gridding session one week prior to the exam date. This pre-gridding session will occur in the cafeteria at 8 a.m. on October 12 and should take about 30 to 40 minutes.
If you would like for your child to take the PSAT, you must email Ms. Kelly at lkelly@fultonscienceacademy.org and let her know that you want your child to take the PSAT on October 19th.
You can also have your child see Ms. Kelly in the Guidance office in order to sign up in person. The deadline to sign up your child to take the PSAT/NMSQT is September 22nd for test ordering purposes. All exams must be ordered by this date. The PSAT/NMSQT is for 8th, 9th and 10th graders only

SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM
APPLY NOW FOR YOUR 2017 TAX CREDIT
Dear FSA Families,
We are pleased to announce details surrounding the GA Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Applications to participate are being accepted now, and we hope you will choose to participate.
This program provides an opportunity for taxpayers to redirect Georgia tax dollars and, in turn, provide financial aid assistance to FSA students. We would greatly appreciate it if you would please apply and choose Fulton Science Academy Private School as your designated school.
Please also inform your friends, co-workers, and relatives who live in Georgia; they can also participate and help support our school.
How can this tax credit benefit both Fulton Science Academy Private School and myself?
Under this law, you can redirect a portion of your Georgia income tax to provide financial aid assistance to FSA students based upon need. You will receive a tax credit on your state income taxes and a charitable deduction on your federal incomes taxes for the amount of your contribution. For married couples filing jointly, the maximum tax credit-eligible contribution is $2,500 ($1,000 as an individual).
How do I participate in the program?
It’s easy. All you have to do is complete our easy paperless process, and Apogee will submit the paperwork on your behalf. Apogee will process your approval notice within 30 days. Once the approval notice is received, please send your payment by check or pay online within 60 days of your approval date.
Is there a limit regarding how much I can give each year?
Yes, the amount you can give is limited by your tax filing status:
- Married Filing Jointly: Maximum of $2,500
- Individual Filer: Maximum of $1,000
- Married Filing Separately: Maximum of $1,250
- Individuals who receive pass-through income can contribute up to $10k
- C-Corporation: Up to 75% of GA tax liability
Can I direct my contribution to help a specific student?
Although we understand why it would be ideal to designate specific recipients, this is not possible. Apogee does not accept donations that are allocated for specific individuals. Donors would lose their ability to receive a charitable contribution, as well as the Georgia tax credit.
Apogee is a 501c3 non-profit organization and, as such, is bound first and foremost by the rules and regulations governing this special status. As a 501c3, Apogee is not permitted to accept any donations directed to a specific individual. To do so would put Apogee’s non-profit status in jeopardy and, in turn, its SSO status in jeopardy.
Who or what is Apogee?
Apogee Scholarship Fund is a state registered SSO (Student Scholarship Organization) as well as a 501c3 non-profit organization whose primary functions are to facilitate the process of distributing tax credits in exchange for donations and to disburse those funds for private school tuition scholarships.
"Apogee" (ap-uh-jee) is defined as the highest point (typically of an arc). To this end, Apogee strives to help children reach their highest educational potential.
How do I know what my GA tax liability is?
Your GA tax liability is typically 6% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). You can also look at Line 18 of your GA tax return (Form 500) to learn your GA tax liability.
Why should I give now?
The State has placed a yearly cap on the amount of credit available. That amount is $58 million. That means that every school, every taxpayer, and every corporation in GA is drawing from the exact same pool of credits.
Once the funds are distributed, interested agencies must wait until the following year to participate in the program. Once funds are deposited, they are immediately available to assist families who want the best educational choice for their children.
Please note: The yearly cap is generally met on the very first day of January; we expect this trend to continue until the cap is raised beyond the $58 million. For this reason, it is strongly encouraged that you please submit your application as soon as possible to be considered for approval.
Can I reduce my quarterly estimated tax payments by the amount I donate?
This is a great opportunity to write the check to support education instead of paying that portion of estimated taxes. Please ask your accountant to reduce your quarterly estimated tax payment by the amount of your contribution. This will reduce each of your quarterly payments by 25% of the amount you intend to contribute.
What happens if my donation exceeds my tax liability?
The tax credit is a “non-refundable” credit. This means you cannot receive a refund for any more than your GA tax liability. Any excess credit beyond your tax liability can be carried forward for up to five years.
Do I have to include my check with my donation package when mailing to Apogee?
No. Apogee cannot accept payments prior to January 1. Since the vast majority of applications received are early applications, payment should be made after approval has been secured. Payment must be madewithin 60 days of approval.
What is Apogee's Tax ID Number?
FEIN: 26-2693572
Is this donation a charitable deduction on my Federal return in addition to the credit?
Yes. Because of the 501c3 status, you are eligible to receive a Federal Charitable Deduction for the amount of your contribution. The law does require that you increase your State income by the amount of your Charitable Deduction on your Federal return (donation amount).
Can Apogee help me understand how this credit will affect my specific tax situation?
Yes. Apogee is well versed in the specifics of how this credit affects most tax scenarios and is happy to offer guidance regarding how this credit is related to your specific tax situation.
As always, we also suggest that you please consult your personal tax advisor, as they will have the best understanding of your specific tax situation.
How do I get started?
Simply log onto http://www.apogee123.org.
