Bristow Run ES Panther Press
October 2022
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Happy Fall! We are off to a great start here at Bristow Run Elementary! Teachers and students have begun building relationships, establishing routines, and creating classroom communities that will set the stage for a successful year of learning together. As administrators, we look forward to working closely with our families to strengthen our school/family partnership. Seeing so many families out for the annual Block Party was wonderful. A huge thank you to our PTO for organizing the block party and working around all the construction obstacles.
Next week is our Back to School Nights! Grades K-2 will be Tuesday at 6:00, and grades 3-5 will be Thursday at 6:00. Mrs. Cortez will be meeting with the parents of her students at 5:30, so please arrive early if your child works directly with Mrs. Cortez. Following the teachers’ presentations, the administration will have a short meeting with parents in the gym to review our school’s Continuous Improvement Plan! We will start at 7:00 and will conclude no later than 7:30. We hope to see many of our parents out for BTSN!
Parent conferences are scheduled for Monday, Oct. 31. We would like to encourage all our parents to sign up to attend a fall conference with their child’s teacher. Teachers will be sharing more regarding conferences during their Back to School nights. We hope parents will take advantage of this opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher to learn more about the beginning of year benchmark testing and how to support your child at home. Research proves that parent conferences help strengthen the school and family partnership for a successful school year!

Watch D.O.G.S. Dad's of Great Students!
It was great seeing so many of our father figures out for our Watch D.O.G Launch Night! This program helps provide positive male role models for students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important. Watch Dogs also provide an extra set of eyes and ears to enhance school security, reduce bullying and provide a greater sense of safety throughout the school day. The program's mission is to support principals and teachers by providing willing volunteers while contributing to improved student outcomes.

BRES Back to School Night Information
One Book One School: Book Reveal Shhhh... It is a SURPRISE for Students!
Bristow Run Elementary School is about to take part in a special, schoolwide shared reading event called One School One Book. Every teacher will receive a copy of the same book - Our Friend Hedgehog: The Story of Us. Every classroom in grades K-5 will read the book at the same pace. Students will have the chance to participate in daily discussions and trivia. With this activity, our goal is to build a community of readers at Bristow Run! Everyone in the school will be following along together! Additionally, the students will experience an engaging scavenger hunt kick-off program. Classes will follow clues in the building to a secret location that will reveal the title of the book and a special message from the author.
If you are interested in volunteering on Friday, October 21st, to decorate and transform our scavenger hunt location into a FOREST, please fill out the survey below using the link. Be sure to bring your creativity! Thank you in advance for your consideration. We are so excited to begin this school-wide activity!
PAWS: Positive Behavior System
Classes are aiming to earn 10 PAWS per week. The earning period for PAWS is Friday- Thursday, so classes will know by end-of-day on Thursday if they earned a prize/incentive for that Friday. So far, students have earned stuffed animal day, pajama day, extra recess, and electronic day just to name a few.
Our staff loves rewarding the students for their positive behavior that they are showing daily at BRES! Ask your child how many PAWS they earned this week so far! For all classes that reach 70 PAWS points by the end of the 1st quarter, they will receive a Dance Party Celebration that will take place on Friday, October 28th

Garden Update
Our garden helpers have been hard at work weeding our garden. While weeding the garden we discovered many grey and orange grubs under the dirt bed. Further research revealed that those little grubs will turn into Japanese Beetles! The grubs will stay hidden under the ground for 10 months before emerging as an adult beetle. We will have another weeding workday in October. Come to the next garden workday to see what critters are hidden underneath the dirt!
SCA
Thank you to all the students who applied to be Student Council Representatives this year. We held interviews for our grade-level rep spots and students did a phenomenal job. We have selected 13 students for this year and are very excited to begin positively adding to our Bristow Run school culture. Our first meeting will be on Thursday, October 13th from 3:45-4:30 pm. Students received their acceptance and thank you letters on Friday, October 7th.
