June 2019 Newsletter - Final Newsletter

A Note from the Principal

Dear Wade King Families,

Your children have accomplished some amazing things this year! As our year ends, I hope you will take time to reflect on those accomplishments and celebrate your child's growth. Our recent Portfolio Celebrations are one of my favorite events because it gives children an opportunity to share their work with their families. It is an opportunity to see their growth since school began, and for older children, to see their growth over several years. Your children should be very proud!

This morning, we had our last School Meeting to celebrate the many things we have done as a school community this year. We also said good-bye to several staff and to our amazing 5th graders. The video below will give you a glimpse of our celebration. Enjoy!

Here's to a summer of making memories with family and friends!

Summer Play Date - Saturday, August 3rd from 10-11am

ALL Wade King families are invited to join us for a Playground Play Date on Saturday, August 3rd. This is a great time for students and parents to connect with old friends, and meet new friends. We hope to see you there!

One Schoolhouse - Our District-Wide PTA Equity Fund

Within the Bellingham School District, we act as One Schoolhouse. We believe every student in Bellingham should have access to a great education. We also know that there is great disparity among our elementary PTA's and the funds they are able to raise to support extra activities at their schools. The Bellingham Schools Foundation offered to support Bellingham Elementary School PTA’s in creating an Equity Fund. PTA’s who chose to participate, would contribute 10% of the funds raised from their big, annual fundraiser to an Equity Fund. The Equity Fund would then be redistributed to each PTA, taking into consideration the number of students in the school and the percentage of students receiving free and/or reduced lunch in each school.

At Wade King, 10% of our fundraising is approximately $2,919. That is the amount we would contribute to the Equity Fund. In addition, 17% of our 420 students receive free and/or reduced lunch. Based on those numbers, we would receive $1,398 back. This means that in the end, Wade King's PTA budget would decrease by $1,521, but students in other Bellingham Elementary schools would benefit from their PTA's having a larger budget. It is a One Schoolhouse Model!

The charts below show how contributing to the Equity Fund would impact each school's PTA. Almost every elementary school has decided to be a part! At our PTA Meeting last week, we made the decision to participate as well. If you have questions about the Equity Fund, please connect with our PTA President, Rebecca Hutchison or School Principal, Stephanie Johnson.

Attention Families Leaving Wade King

At the end of the school year, families of 5th graders and families of students who will not be attending Wade King, will no longer have access to Seesaw. The link below has directions to save any photos and videos that you want to keep. If there are any that you want to save, be sure to do that soon! If your child will be at Wade King next year, you will still be able to access Seesaw.

Your Child's Next Teacher

As students and families leave for summer vacation, they are often wondering when they find out who their next teacher will be. As in years past, you will receive an email and/or text message from our school with this information. You can expect it on Friday, August 23rd. One difference this year is that we will not be posting class lists on our office windows as your child's privacy is important to us. Please be sure that your contact information and preferences are set up in Skylert to be sure you receive this information. There are directions below!

Meet and Greet & First Day of School

We hope your family can join us for Meet and Greet on Tuesday, August 27th, from 12:00-1:00 pm. This is a chance for you and your child to meet their new teacher, visit new classrooms, and reconnect with friends.

The first day of school for 1st - 5th grade is Wednesday, August 28th.

The first day of school for kindergarten is Thursday, August 29th.
