Department News- Social Studies
The MLS Social Studies Department continues to make it a priority to promote full participation in the democratic process....registering to vote is a good way to commence this process!
Another important date is April 3, 2023 which is the registration deadline for the May 2nd primary election. Ohio allows 17-year olds to vote for candidates in the primary elections if they are 18 by the November election and registered to vote.
Government teachers Mr. Edwards, Mrs. Webb, Mr. Wolshuck and Mr. McConihe have voter registration forms in their respective classrooms and will get the forms to the Lorain County Board of Elections. Students wanting a voter registration form can also ask any office secretary for assistance.
The American History Classes are on UNIT 4: Prosperity, Depression & the New Deal. Students completed a google slide project on the Roaring 20's, will learn what caused the Great Depression, and how FDR's New Deal offered remedies during the tough economic time period.
Mr. McConihe's Government class finished Economics - Fiscal & Monetary Policy, and will be starting a Judicial Unit which includes a criminal mock trial. Students will be studying the criminal justice system and identifying lawyer strategies. Students will also celebrate Black History Month learning Thurgood Marshall and the N.A.A.C.P. helped to overturn Plessy v. Ferguson and won the landmark court case Brown v. Board of Education, Topeka, KS.
For 2023-2024 scheduling purposes, please note Mr. McConihe is offering an easy and fun class called Sports History. This class is only offered every other year. Students will learn about the many sports teams and figures throughout the early days of sports, famous ground-breaking sports achievements and events, as well as modern issues and controversies that exist in the sports world.
In honor of Black History Month, over 30 Steele history students are participating in the Toni Morrison Essay Contest sponsored by the Community Foundation of Lorain County.
Welcome Mr. Whelan!
The Social Studies Department is excited to welcome Mr. Stephen Whelan! Stephan is an Amherst alumni and will be teaching American History, World History, and Psychology. Here is a short bio:
My name is Stephen Whelan and I am the new long-term substitute in the Social Studies department here at Steele. I am an U.S. Army veteran and a Baldwin Wallace graduate with degrees in both education and history with a specialization in war history. I am also receiving my Master's degrees in American History in Government from Ashland University in the coming weeks. Along with my wife and new baby at home, I stay very busy but always find time to read a book about my favorite topic, the American Founding. I have a passion for learning and all things history and would love to chat if you see me in the hallway!
