Pursuing a Dream- The Great Gatsby

Kyndal Runnels

What is the cost of pursuing a dream?

Giving up other opportunities for that dream

Examples from The Great Gatsby

Gatsby gave up his opportunity to find a woman who's worthy of his love "'We haven't met for many years,' said Daisy, her voice as matter-of-factly as it could ever be.' 'Five years next November.' The automatic quality of Gatsby's answer set us all back...'"(Fitzgerald 87). and a chance to actually do something great with his life "'He had a big future before him, you know. He was only a young man, but he had a lot of brain power here.' 'If he's of lived, he'd been a great man. He'd of helped build up the country'"(Fitzgerald 168). all to be with Daisy.

Nick gave up his opportunity of having a normal life when he moved to New York to start his career "and now I was going to bring back all such things into my life again that most limited of all specialists, the "well-rounded man".(Fitzgerald 4). and when he became associated with Gatsby, Daisy and Tom; he will have to live with what happened to all of them for the rest of his life "After Gatsby's death the East was haunted for me like that, distorted beyond my eyes' power of correction"(Fitzgerald 176).

Celebrity Examples

Examples- Real World

People in the modern world definitely still have to sacrifice this in order to attain a dream. Lots of celebrities still sacrifice this in order to attain fame and fortune.

Jennifer Aniston was so busy getting her career going and becoming famous that she out off having kids and now she's in her mid-forties and regrets not having kids earlier in her life.

Many celebrities like: David Crosby, Rod Stewart and Roseanne Barr gave up their children for adoption because they got pregnant when they were young and at the verge of getting their career going to become famous and they didn't want a baby to tie them down.

Is it worth it?

In my personal opinion I do think that giving up some opportunities is worth it in the end to attain your dream but I don't think it's worth giving up starting a family or something else big like that. Starting a family is very important to most people so giving up that opportunity for a dream like Jennifer Aniston did isn't worth it in the end to me. In other cases though, things happen for a reason so maybe you're not suppose to take that opportunity right then like Gatsby did, he waited several years for his dream and he finally got it when Daisy saw him; and a new and better opportunity comes along that in the end helps you to attain your dream.
