News from the Principal
Hello Discovery Families,
It’s amazing to think we are over halfway through the school year! As I visit Zoom classrooms, it is evident to see just how hard students, staff and families are working. Our teachers are working hard to provide rigorous and engaging content to our students, and our students are working hard to learn at high levels, and families are putting in overtime supporting students and their online learning. Thank you for the support you provide your student(s) at home. It makes a difference! We appreciate your ongoing support as we continue to navigate these challenging times. Online/distance learning is hard! We appreciate you and the support you continue to provide for your students, and for our staff. Everyone is working hard to make the best of this difficult situation. Thank you!
Black History Month
February is Black History month in our country. The month honors African American people’s rich range of experiences, struggles and achievements throughout history and into the modern day. History.com defines Black History Month in the following way:
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme. The Black History Month 2021 theme, “Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity” explores the African diaspora, and the spread of Black families across the United States.
If you'd like to teach your child more about Black History month, you can find resources on PBS kids (see links below), as well as other online resources. These resources represent only a couple that are available and can help support your child/family in learning more about black history, as well as the celebration during the month of February.
Mid-Winter Break
As a reminder, Mid-Winter Break begins on Monday, February 15 and ends on Friday, February 19. There will be no live teaching during the week and teachers will not be posting online learning activities. I hope you will find time to engage with your students during this time to make family memories. Make a commitment to spend time with your child away from the computer. Read books with your child, play games - board games or otherwise, and try to get outside everyday.
In partnership,
Mrs. Koehnen

School Immunization Information
Is your student current on their immunizations?
We are hopeful that a return to the classroom is on the horizon. In order to come back to In Person learning it is mandatory your student/s have a current, signed Washington State Certificate of Immunization (CIS) or Certificate of Exemption (COE). If you are unsure your student is up to date with their shots, here are some ways you can obtain the required records for school attendance:
- Sign up to obtain your child’s Washington state immunization records from the Department of Health: https://wa.myir.net/register/. Once you are registered, you can log in, print the record, sign it and provide to the school.
- If your child was born in another state/country, obtain a copy of your child’s immunization record from their pediatrician. Both the clinic record and a handwritten Washington State CIS are needed for a valid record.
- Certificate of Exemption (COE) forms must be signed by parent and healthcare provider. Personal exemption for MMR vaccine is no longer accepted per Washington state law.
