A message from Mrs. Rudder
Dear Penngrove Families,
During the three weeks that we were on Fall Break there were numerous tragedies that occurred both locally and nationally. These events upset all of us. In light of all of these incidents, a parent contacted me to find out what the school does to ensure the safety of the Penngrove students on a daily basis.
I would like to share the following protocols we have for emergencies.
One of the things we practice most is what to do in case of a fire. These drills happen on a monthly basis.
When we have a fire drill the Rancho Adobe Fire Department responds. The children leave their classrooms and go in an orderly manner to the field. When they get there, their teacher takes roll call to ensure that they are all present. The principal goes out, as well as the office staff, and the teachers check in with the office staff, reporting whether or not their students are all there. Our custodian goes around the school to check to make sure all alarms are working before turning them off and we send a report on the findings to the Petaluma School District. We had a fire drill before break and I was very pleased with how well the students responded.
We also have earthquake drills a few times during the year. In the event of an earthquake the students have been taught to get under desks or tables and to wrap their arm around a leg of the table/desk. This is in case of a severe earthquake which might shake the floor...the desk/table would shield the student from anything that might fall from above. When schools are built, they have to follow stricter building codes than homes. Even though Penngrove is an older school, it meets all of the codes. In the event of an earthquake, after the shaking stops, the students and staff would evacuate to the field just like in a fire.
One of the reasons that we ask all volunteers to check into the office and wear a bright pink or yellow sticker is to make sure that the only people on campus are those that we know and trust. If anyone is on campus without that sticker a member of staff goes up to them to see why they are there. If we were to be concerned about a person on campus we would lock down the school and call law enforcement. The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office serves our school.
In the event of an emergency we have protocols in place to release students to parents and others who are authorized to pick up a child. I encourage parents to list quite a few (grandparents, neighbors, aunts, uncles, friends). Each family should make a plan regarding what to do in an emergency, such as deciding who would be picking up the children from school.
I hope this information helps you to understand all we do to make sure that your children are safe while they are at school. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact the front office to make an appointment with me.

Playground Supervisor / Crossing Guard Openings at Penngrove
Did you know that our Interim Principal, Mrs. Rudder, started her career in education as a Playground Supervisor? She says it was one of the best jobs she ever had!
Do you have free time at the beginning, middle, or end of the school day? Would you like to earn some $ at Penngrove? We'd love to have you join TeamPenn!
The Playground Supervisor opening is daily from 11:45 to 12:45. The Crossing Guard hours are from 7:40 AM to 8:40 AM daily and again from 2:15 to 3:30 every day but Wednesday which is 12:45 to 2:00.
You may contact the Petaluma City Schools Human Resources Department or Mrs. Rudder if you are interested in either or both positions.
Halloween Costumes
We are all looking forward to the Halloween Parade next Tuesday. Consider this a friendly reminder that all costumes that are worn to school need to be safe and cannot be so scary that they frighten our youngest students. This means NO scary clowns, nothing violent, no weapons. If you have questions regarding whether or not a costume might or might not be appropriate, please contact the school office before Halloween.
Our New Sign!
Thank you to our Local Heroes
Room 11 is writing thank you letters to our caring and brave community helpers. If anyone wants to join us, we are happy to include them in our packages.
We are writing to fire departments, PG&E, Police Officers, and local heroes just to name a few. Due date for all letters/pictures is: Monday 10/30.
6th Grade Outdoor Ed
The 6th grade class has been busy getting ready for the Fall Festival! We will be selling a hot dog meal (hot dog, chips, and water) at this Saturday's Fall Festival for $5. These proceeds will be going to the 6th Grade Outdoor Ed program. We also have a Haunted House for kids of all ages to go through in the 6th grade rooms. Come and enjoy the fun! Bring some cash too!
Please make sure you check your Kiddos Back pack next week. We will begin another Mixed Bag Fundraiser again benefiting the 6th Grade Outdoor Ed program. This fundraiser will start on November 1st and end on November 15th. It is a great opportunity to get Christmas Gifts and to help get a 6th grader to camp! This fundraiser can be done on line as well! Be on the look out for the Catalog!
Conferences and Report Cards
As you know, Fall Conferences will be held during the weeks of November 6th and November 13th. There is no school on November 10th as it is the Veteran's Day holiday. Teachers have begun sending out information and conference sign-ups. During those weeks school will be dismissed early each day, following the Wednesday schedule every day.
Conferences are a special time to talk with your child's teacher. Please arrive on time because the teachers have many conferences the same day. If you have some questions for the teacher, list them from most important to least because of possible time constraints. If there are any changes that are happening in your home, please share them with the teacher. Finally, after the conference, please make time to share with your child the topics you discussed with his/her teacher. It's important for them to hear from you about how they are doing in class!
This year the K-6 Report Cards will look different. The major changes will be in the Math Section. Please take time to look the below document over so you can familiarize yourself and be better prepared to ask questions, if you should have any.

How to Prepare for an Emergency: Storing Food and Water
With the recent natural disasters that have impacted our fellow Californians as well as other Americans nationwide, it’s ever apparent how quickly any of us could be affected by an emergency. When natural disasters strike the food supply can be disrupted without warning, so it is important to be prepared ahead of time. Below are some tips to help plan for a safe supply of food and water.
How To Store Food:
- Collect food items that have a long storage life, require little or no cooking, water, or refrigeration — canned foods.
- Make sure to consider the needs of babies, family members who are on special diets, and pets.
- Check the expiration dates on canned foods and dry mixes. Use and replace food before its expiration date.
- Store food in a cool, dry, dark place. The best temperature is 40° to 70°F.
- Pack an extra supply of cooking utensils such as a manual can- and bottle-opener, knives, forks, and spoons.
How to Store Water:
- Store at least 1 gallon of water per day for each person and each pet. Consider storing more water than this for hot climates, for pregnant women, and for people who are sick.
- Store at least a 3-day supply of water for each person and each pet, or a 2-week supply if possible.
- Unopened commercially bottled water is the safest and most reliable emergency water supply.
- Observe the expiration date for store-bought water. Label other stored water as “drinking water” and include a storage date.
- Replace stored water that is not commercially bottled every six months.
- Keep stored water in a place with a fairly constant cool temperature.
- Store a bottle of unscented liquid household chlorine bleach to disinfect your water and to use for general cleaning and sanitizing.
A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) can provide individualized guidance to help you and your family prepare a balanced and safe food supply in case of an emergency. Visit EatRight.org to locate an RDN near you. For more information on keeping food and water safe before and after an emergency, go to FoodSafety.gov/keep/emergency.
