Week of August 17-21

New Google Meet Nicknames

This week, all live classes at Hudson will be accessed with nicknames instead of direct links in Canvas. For our band classes the nicknames will be as follows:

Beginner Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone - beckerband2021

Beginner Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba - urbanband2021

Beginner Percussion - hudsonpercussion

Symphonic Band (Sub Non-VarsityA) - beckerband2021

Honors Band (Non-Varsity) - urbanband2021

Wind Symphony (Varsity) - beckerband2021

You will type these class nicknames in to the generic google meet website.

2nd Band Binder and Instrument Pickup

We are having a second band binder and instrument pickup this week. On Monday, August 14 we will be in the back of the school from 7:30-8:30am and again from 5:00-6:00pm for band binder and instrument pickup. Please drive to the BACK of the school and stop at the last sidewalk on the left. We will be setup outside and will bring your items to your car. Please do not exit your car during pickup!


6th graders playing oboe, bassoon, French horn, euphonium, and tuba will have a school-provided instrument to pick up as well.

Wind Symphony Sectionals

We are going to attempt to begin SOME Wind Symphony sectionals this week on Wednesday, August 19. We will not see all sections this week, but will begin testing this format with the following students:

Clarinets from 1:00-1:45pm

Flutes from 1:50-2:35pm

Percussion from 2:40-3:20pm

You will log on to our regular class Google Meet through Canvas at the assigned time. Have your instrument, scale sheet, and All-Region music ready. Percussion, you will only need a drum pad this week.

We will begin sectionals with the rest of the Wind Symphony and Honors Band students the week of August 24. More details will come soon.

Please understand that this year is unlike any other and our policies, procedures, and plans are likely to change throughout the year, especially with regards to performances when we are allowed to gather together again.

Band Fees

Band fees for the fall semester will be $30 for all students. This will cover their physical band binder with all included materials, a band t-shirt, and full year subscriptions to Breezin' Thru Theory and Music First, online music platforms we will be using throughout the year for virtual instruction/assessment. If your student is a 7th or 8th grader and your band fees were paid in full last year, you will receive a credit on your Charms account for activities we were not able to complete/attend in the spring. The credits in Charms will be reflected by August 31.

Band fees can be paid through Paypal in Charms (preferred method), with credit card, and by cash/check if absolutely necessary.


**Students using school-owned instruments (oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet, tenor sax, bari sax, French horn, euphonium, and tuba) are required to pay an instrument usage fee set by the district of $25 per semester ($50 for the year). This fee will be assessed in Skyward and payments will need to be made online in Skyward this fall. We are still setting this up in Skyward and will let you know when the charges have been applied so you are able to make the payment.**

Grading Info

The first week, we took grades on 3 assignments in all band classes. We are working through all of the submissions and are updating grades as quickly as we can. Right now, all of our grading is taking place in Canvas. Soon we will learn how to export the grades from Canvas directly into Skyward. For the time being, you should see 3 graded assignments in Canvas. If there was a problem with an assignment, we have added a comment about what needs to be redone. Please let us know if you have questions. We appreciate your patience as we all learn this new system and get used to virtual learning. It's going to be great!
