Creativity + Grit + Growth Mindset > Science
On November 10th, Sophia Swartz was one of 5 speakers for TEDx at West Chester University. Her presentation titled “Creativity + Grit + Growth Mindset > Science” focused on the attributes that she feels defines a scientist. By sharing her personal story of how she fell in love with science and breaking it down into three small shifts in attitude, Sophia demonstrated how everyone possesses the organic ingredients necessary to defy science stereotypes and harness our potential to change the world around us.
Sophia has received recognition from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the MIT THINK Scholars Program, the Pennsylvania BioGENEius Competition, Monsanto Company, Wolfram Mathematica, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Science.
Sophia even has a minor planet named after her.
Titans Connect
Titans Connect is a peer-mentor group for students looking for an opportunity to make new friends and socialize. At least once a month, the group meets in the library to play games, watch movies, and just have fun. The year culminates with a Titans Connect Prom in the spring.
Titans Connect is very pleased to introduce the first-ever Titans Connect Newsletter to the CB South Community!
Link 2 Unity Event
On Saturday, November 11th, LINK leaders from CB South traveled to their alumni middle schools to lead Tamanend and Unami students in community-building and leadership activities. Link 2 Unity, a program now entering its fourth year, aims to “link” together UMS and TMS with South leaders, in the hopes of training future leaders in the areas of community, energy, and positivity. South juniors and seniors lead students in meaningful conversations, teach leadership skills through fun activities, and build relationships with the TMS and UMS students. Some highlights of November 11th included an obstacle course, a wooden plank challenge, and silent Pictionary. Each event was designed by South students themselves to show the middle school students the impact of positivity, community, and leadership.
In total, 50 students from CB South were involved, along with almost 80 students from the middle schools. South students will lead two more “L2U” events in the winter and the spring.
ELD Community Night
On Tuesday, November 14th, Barclay Elementary School held their first ELD Community Night. This event was made possible by a CB Cares grant and was an opportunity to reach out to the families of ELD (English Language Development) students in the community. A group of CB South Spanish students and Spanish Honor Society members participated in the event having dinner with the families and speaking to them in Spanish to learn about where they come from and some of the struggles that they face. The CB South students were wonderful ambassadors and played an integral part in the success of this event. They look forward to participating next year as well!
CB South's Anonymous Aid Association
