A Message from Ms. Lilly
RNE Newsletter March 3rd, 2017
The Principal's Office
We are excited to have seven parent candidates for the upcoming School Governance Council elections! During March 22nd-28th, parents will vote to select the two candidates who will represent them on next year's council. Please take time to read about our candidates in our SGC Election Smore tomorrow.
This week the Georgia Department of Education released a measurement called the “Beat The Odds” index. This analysis measures schools against those with similar backgrounds to see whether they performed better than statistically expected on the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI). The CCRPI is Georgia’s statewide accountability system that measures schools and school districts on a 100-point scale based on multiple indicators of performance.
Our school fell into the “Did Not Beat The Odds” category. While this may sound alarming, it’s really not. What this means is that our school was measured against others that have similar backgrounds (size, grade level, student demographics and student mobility), and by comparison, our CCRPI was not higher than those schools. This doesn’t mean that our school is not excelling or achieving, or that we are not providing adequate support to our students. It means only that we did not “beat the odds” against schools that had similar backgrounds to ours.
We use many measures to determine our school’s success, and this is just one data point of information. I am happy to share more information about the Beats The Odds index if you wish.
Enjoy the weekend!
Maureen
WHAT DOES PERSONALIZED LEARNING MEAN FOR STUDENTS?
Have you heard this new term Personalized Learning, and you start getting a headache because you know its important but you can find out what it really means for your child and your school. To put it simply, personalized learning means that each student will have his/her learning needs met. Personalized learning classrooms may look and feel different for today’s students than they did when their parents were in school, but students are likely to understand the changes. In fact, many schools shift to personalized learning because of community conversations with students and their families who share their frustrations with the current system and want to see a new approach put into place. In other words, because students stand to gain the most from the shift to personalized learning, they are typically the biggest advocates for these changes.
We will share family friendly articles in the newsletter to help spread the information on Personalized Learning, as well as make the topic easier to understand.
Georgia Milestones Grades 3, 4, and 5
Beginning April 13th, our students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will participate in the Georgia Milestones. Below you will find some pertinent information regarding the administration of the Milestones Assessment.
The Georgia Milestones Assessments will begin on April 13th and finish on April 28th, Students will test every other day. Each day, testing will begin promptly at 7:50. It is imperative that all students are here and on time during the entire testing window. Research shows that students test better when they take their assessment with their class, rather than on make-up days.
This year students in grades three and four will take the Reading sections 1, 2, and 3, as well as, both Math sections. Our students in fifth will take Reading sections 1, 2, and 3, Math, Science, and Social Studies sections 1 and 2.
Below you will find the dates of administration for each subject. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to our Assistant Principal, Ms. Monica In.
Taking on the Test
Standardized testing is a tool that schools use to learn about students’ academic needs. These tests are designed to give a common measure of students’ performance. Our students will be embarking upon the Georgia Milestones Test in April. Here are some tips that you can use to get your child comfortable with taking the test.
1. Find out what will be measured on the test.
2. Find out what are your child areas of weakness.
3. Give your child a chance to practice.
4. Talk to your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns.
Understanding the role of testing is the key to ensuring your child will do his/her best on the test. Please visit the following link to learn more about the Georgia Milestones. http://www.gadoe.org/Curriculum-Instruction-and-Assessment/Assessment/Pages/Georgia-Milestones-Assessment-System.aspx

PLACEMENT CONSIDERATION FOR 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR
The Roswell North Elementary Administration is committed to placing each child in his/her best learning environment. An enormous amount of time and effort is devoted to place each child appropriately.
If you feel that your child has unique learning needs or if there are other considerations you would like to bring to our attention such as separate best friends, or family/personal challenges, you may choose to complete the 2017-2018 Placement Consideration Form that is available in the front office. As you list the characteristics of a teacher you feel will best meet your child’s needs, please do not list the obvious characteristics such as “organized, nurturing, structured, positive, motivating, challenging, creative,” etc. We believe all our teachers possess the previously listed characteristics. The letters will be shared with your child’s teacher in the fall in order to ensure your child’s needs are thoroughly communicated.
While we do welcome your input regarding your child’s individual learning needs, we cannot accept emails, phone calls, nor can we hold personal conferences regarding student placement. Due to changes in personnel and class sizes, some teachers will change grade levels and staff teaching assignments will not be finalized until summer. Forms that name specific teachers will not be considered.
Please keep in mind that placement consideration forms should be the exception rather than the rule, and the final decision on class placement resides with the school.
If you choose to complete the RNE Placement Consideration Form it is due on or before 3:00 pm on Thursday, March 30. Forms will not be accepted after this deadline. RNE Placement Consideration Forms should be returned to the front office in a sealed envelope to the attention of Laureen Wagner, Curriculum Support.
Thank you for your support and cooperation as we work together for the benefit of all students at Roswell North.
We need you!
Parents of Roswell North…Thank you SO MUCH to those who donated to the Foundation’s Annual Campaign in the fall. We raised approximately $30k to help fund our enrichment projects, including our science lab. But we still need to do more to keep things running!
Have you had the opportunity to volunteer in the science lab with your child’s class yet? It is so cool to see our raised funds at work with those little minds churning away. In order to keep the science lab running, get shade structures over the playground and help with a number of other projects, we need to raise another $30k during our Silent Auction at the Spring Soiree on April 22nd. To do that, we need lots of amazing items for the Silent Auction. That’s where you come in! Do you have a business that could donate a service, product or gift card to the Silent Auction? Do you have a connection to a local restaurant or shop that may want to donate? Please contact Jessica Schumacher at jessicaschumacher@me.com with any ideas or donations.
