The Cause
The SMA is a charity that is set out to solve a disease, called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. This disease in a nutshell, destroys the "motor neurons", of the spinal cord, and brain stem. It affects limb movement, head and neck movement, and even breathing. There are four types of this disease, in a list of type one through four, and one being the most severe. There is no cure for this disease yet, but the people of this charity work hard towards finding one.
The charity was founded in 1999, when the twins Cassidy and Skylar Swanson were diagnosed with the worst "type" of SMA. The goal is simple, raise money to find a cure, and they work hard to do this, even through the worst. In the June of 2007, Cassie died of the diseases affect on the respiratory system. She and her sister have touched the lives of many, and are a beacon of hope for this disease
