PARENT CONFERENCES THIS WEEK!
Please note this week's schedule...
This week, we welcome parents to join teachers in discussing students' progress and report card grades. Conferences provide an opportunity to strengthen our relationships with you by building trust and enlisting support. Strong home-school partnerships yield higher academic achievement for our students.
During your child's report card conferences, you will learn your child's areas of strength and relative weakness as measured by ongoing assessments and daily work, goals or "next steps" for your child, and ways you can help support your child reach their full potential.
The schedule for the upcoming week is as follows:

PRODUCTIVE STRUGGLE
What it is, and why it's important...
Productive struggle is "working hard at something that is difficult to do, persevering when the going gets tough, and making progress" (NCTM Summer Interactive Institute, 2017). Some of the benefits of productive struggle include increased resiliency, problem-solving skills, and persistence.
Our teachers are encouraged to design learning experiences which engage students in productive struggle. Teachers can use the following strategies to implement these types of learning experiences:
- Be a "warm demander." (Holding students to high standards but supporting them throughout the process of meeting those standards.)
- Providing frequent opportunities to practice learned skills (to increase automatic retrieval of information).
- Providing instruction in shorter bursts rather than during long periods.
- Encourage academic risk-taking and productive struggle by making failure a natural part of the learning process. (One example: "Freedom to Fail Rubric")
Parents can help support students' productive struggle at home, too. The goal of finding that "sweet spot" between helping too much and not enough will ultimately yield confident and successful students who are brave enough to tackle challenges ahead. To learn more about the benefits of productive struggle, read, "7 Reasons Why Struggle is Important for Kids."
