Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Issue 2

Big picture

A word from Mr Broom

Thank you to everyone who has got behind our ALDI Kit for Schools drive. I'm delighted to tell you that we've managed a whopping 184 stickers which means we're beyond half way there after only one week! A super achievement.

It's fair to say the children have had a super week. Project launches right across school have given them a real buzz for learning and some of the work they have produced is truly outstanding. Check out your child's Class Dojo for more information and photos of their learning.

We've added lots of important dates to the 'dates for your diary' section at the bottom of this newsletter. Please take the time to have a look.

Finally, Mr Peter Ball (one of our governors) visited school this morning to look at the daily mile and visit some maths lessons. He really enjoyed his visit and was very complementary of the children's attitudes towards learning and each other. We finished the morning review the school data picture which is looking very strong.

Have a lovely weekend ahead.

Grace's Wonderful Work

I've had many children come to my office this week, demonstrating their outstanding work. Grace arrived today to show me her work from the start of her Rivers topic. I'm sure you'll agree, the presentation in Year 5 has really stepped up. Congratulations Grace!

Cool Milk

Nursery and Reception (under 5) children receive free milk daily. If you would like your child/ren to have a carton of milk at playtime, please register them at . If they are entitled to Free School Meals we can arrange free milk for them, please let the office staff know.

Bikes and Scooter Problems

A polite reminder to ask that bikes and scooters are not ridden on the school premises. We've had a few near misses and we want to avoid any nasty accidents. If our Key Stage 2 children wish to come to school on their bikes please ask at the office for a permission form.

Attendance Good this Week!

With an average of 96.8%, our attendance was above the national average this week. Well done everyone.

Seeded areas of the school entrance

You've probably noticed that following the building works outside of the school entrance, there are areas of seeded soil that are starting to take. We kindly ask that children and adults refrain from walking on this area until the grass is fully grown.

Thank you.

Three Peaks Challenge

You may remember the staff and parents who completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds for a school defibrillator. Well the totals are in and thanks to your generosity we raised:

- £145 through donations on ParentPay

- £449.59 through our Justgiving Website.

A massive thank you to everyone for your support and kind donations. Additionally, many of the individuals raised a significant amount themselves and we had one very kind grandparent who agreed to give any sum that we would fall short on to achieve our target.

We are currently looking at the defibrillator options that are available to us.

Out Special Achievers!

Registering Interest for Nursery Places

If you will be considering nursery provision for your younger children in the future please let us know. We review our nursery provision regularly and information on predicted numbers is essential to help with planning. Those on the register are also welcome to come along to the monthly stay and play sessions to meet other families with young children and our local childminders.

Class Dojo

We're delighted to see such a wonderful uptake in our Class Dojo system of letting you know about what's going on in your child's classroom. It's also a super way of communicating with your child's class teacher. We would however ask you to contact the school office in the event of pick up changes or school absence as the teachers may not access to the system regularly throughout the school day.

Thank you for your support with this.

Y6 Parents Only - Secondary School Applications

Y6 parents have recently been sent information regarding applying for a secondary school place for their child. Please remember the final date for parents to express a preference for a secondary school place is 31st October 2019.

School Policy on Sickness/Diarrhoea

If you child suffers from sickness and / or diarrhoea, we try to minimise infection by implementing a 48 hour absence period from school. This begins from the last instance of any symptoms.

Thank you.

Head Lice

It's that time of year when the temperatures start to fall and the warm classrooms kick in. And with it, comes a surge in head lice.

To reduce the spread, we ask that if your child has long hair that it is tied up. Please also check your child's hair regularly and treat any infection in line with the recommendations provided by the treatment.

Permissions/Consent/School Agreement - PLEASE COMPLETE

It's that time of year where we ask you to complete our school agreement and indicate your consent and permission for school activities/actions.

Thank you very much in advance.

The End of Friends of Hungate... for now!

The Friends of Hungate held their Annual General Meeting on Monday evening with a minimal turn out. With dwindling numbers and only a few members attending, the decision was taken to cease operating.

I would like to thank the team for their incredible hard work and commitment since I joined the school. During the past two years the same individuals have raised 1000s to help support school with clubs, trips, resources and activities to make the children's time in school even better.

The final official Friends of Hungate event will be the Halloween disco on 15th October.

Cycle Event on 27th September - School Closing at 2pm

The World Cycling Championships come to Sherburn on Friday 27th September which is really exciting. The event is due to pass school at around finishing time (3pm) and so that our children can get to see it, and to avoid major congestion, we're closing at 2pm on this day.

Please make arrangements to collect your child at the earlier time. We have also arranged for the Low Mill residential trip to return to school for the slightly earlier time of 2.00pm.

Buddies will remain open as normal.

Thank you.

Support for Sherburn High School

Sherburn High School is looking to refurbish and expand current sports facilities on their site for both schools use and the wider community use. We are trying to get as many parents and local residents to complete a survey and we would very much appreciate your time in helping us to understand what the Sports Facilities needs are in school and the local area and your views on the current facilities we provide.
