What's AVID Elementary?
- Advancement
- Via
- Individual
- Determination
The focus is to instill in students a Growth Mindset. Students with a Growth Mindset believe that they can learn more or become smarter if they work hard and persevere. They view challenges and failures as opportunities to improve their learning and skills, not as an indication they cannot do something. As a result of the Growth Mindset, AVID students succeed in following their dreams and fulfilling their aspirations enabling them to be college and career ready.AVID Elementary takes a systemic approach through the use of WICOR and an explicit focus on high expectations, rigor, and developing a college readiness culture.
WICOR stands for:
- Writing
- Inquiry
- Collaboration
- Organization
- Reading
These strategies are used throughout the year to engage students and increase their achievement.
Some things you may notice include the presence of college pennants in the hallways, student planners, and the 3 ring binder. As the school year continues, the inclusion of AVID strategies will increase as we work these practices into our classrooms.

When I call Franklin, why does an automated system answer my call?
Throughout the day, the health assistant and secretaries are helping students/adults who are in the office, on the phone, or out in the building assisting students/staff. If you do not reach us in person, please leave a voicemail so that we can assist you as needed.
How do I encourage my daughter's interest in robotics?
In honor of the 4th annual International Day of the Girl, our district has partnered with The Rec Foundation, The Children's Museum, and our VEX Robotics student organizations to provide an opportunity for girls in grades K-12 in robotics.
A "Girl-Powered" robotics challenge will be available free of charge to our students on Oct 11th from 4-7pm at the Children's Museum. Our own VEX Robotics students will be mentors and help with the activity.

What's the 411 on the PTO Fall Fundraiser?
The Chip Shoppe/Cherrydale Fundraiser is our biggest source of funding for the year, with Franklin earning 40-50% of the sales. Money raised from this fundraiser supports field trips, technology, playground improvements, classroom needs, and family events!
Students earn prizes once they sell 1 item and earn more prizes as they sell more items. Plus students selling 25 items earn lunch in a limo ride! The class in each grade earning the most will get a class popcorn party!
Donations to Franklin PTO are accepted in lieu of purchases.
Easy online ordering at cherrydale.com -- Be sure to use school code: FRFRNMM
Order forms due: Tuesday, Sept. 27 -- Parent volunteers will be outside at a table collecting packets as students arrive in the morning.
Product Delivery: Monday, Oct. 24, 3-6 p.m.
The PTO would like to thank you and your family for supporting Franklin Elementary's PTO and our efforts to enhance your students' education.
