Our Collective Commitment Corner
Dear Pirate Team,
As I sit here in Paxton during these last twenty minutes of our Parent/Teacher Conference time, I must share with you how our student and parent attendees alike are overwhelmingly impressed with the professionalism and caring hearts at our school. Parent Ashely, for example, just raved about how, after moving here from Kansas with her daughter, they both knew they were in the right place; I have to tell you that I couldn’t agree with her more for my own self! Your devotion to our students and their families is a gift, and that gift is not going unnoticed. Thank you for being who you are day in and day out for our learning community. #PCR3Proud
SOS Day — November 5th
On Tuesday, November 5th, Platte County High School will offer depression awareness and suicide prevention training as a part of the SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program.
This program aims to help students recognize the symptoms of depression and warning signs of suicide in themselves or their friends, and to teach them the appropriate action steps they should take to get help. Our goals in participating in this program are straightforward:
To reduce stigma and help our students understand that depression is a treatable mental illness.
To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression.
To provide students training in how to identify serious depression and potential suicidality in themselves or a friend.
To impress upon youth that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns.
To help students know whom in the school they can turn to for help if they need it.
During plan-time meetings throughout the day on October 30th in the library conference room, teachers who will be facilitating this program will receive implementation training along with manila envelopes with all of the information and forms needed to implement this program. Please take note:
- Attached to this email and listed below is a list of alternate location assignments. Teachers whose PLT class will be meeting in an alternate location need to be sure to inform their students of this alternate location arrangement prior to Tuesday.
- A list of students whose parents have completed the opt-out form will be sent to their PLT teachers in an email on Tuesday morning. After taking attendance, these opt-out students need to report to the Library where an accounting of their presence will also be taken again by the Librarians.
- If a student becomes upset during the presentation and is unable to remain in the classroom, please contact the Library (main building teachers, ext. 1252) or the Paxton Office (Paxton teachers, ext. 1300), where someone will be prepared to escort them from your classroom to meet their needs.
- This year the SOS video will be streamed from the link below. Please log-in to the SOS Portal to get comfortable with navigating the website and finding the video that you will be showing your PLT students on November 5th. Also, please make sure that the technology and sound are functioning properly at your SOS location. See login instructions below:

VISIONARY LEADERSHIP
Missy recently saw a need for better collaboration within our CARE team meetings in order to provide better support to our learners. Missy took the initiative to speak in front of our members to re-establish the norms of the group as well as discuss our "why" in order to promote a better environment for our team to create results oriented plans for our higher risk students.STAFF SCHIVIRs
Heather Brown
INTEGRITY
One Friday afternoon, Officer Jones was called out of the North Cafeteria and there was no one available to help monitor. Bobbie Deeney stepped into our office to ask if anyone was available to help. I paused to consider who in the building could assist, but Heather didn't. Without skipping a beat, she looked at me and said - Let's go! We'll monitor the cafeteria! And off we went. I appreciate that Heather did not hesitate to step in help, showing her level of integrity and protecting the integrity of our counseling office as well that we are part of the team.Safe Schools
