Home of the Champions: Work Together, Win Together!
Hello Champion Families,
I hope you are enjoying some quality time with family this weekend. Hard to believe that February is already coming to a close and we are embarking on the one year anniversary of the final week before the corona virus changed our lives in ways we have never experienced before. What an incredibly long journey we've been on, and for the first time in a long time it is starting to feel like we are getting closer to returning to the way it was where we left off on this very week back in 2020. Although, I know we still have a ways to go and I can't say for sure what things will look like in the months ahead, but there is that hope and renewed sense that we are emerging from the shadow of this pandemic and into a light that will shine once again on all that we know and cherish. I do look forward to the days when we can see each others smiles, shake hands, gather together and even embrace one another. I believe this experience has reminded us of our social nature and our need for connection and a sense of belonging and purpose. So, with that we are looking inward at Carlson to evaluate and strengthen the opportunities that students need to help realize these exact sentiments and be successful. With spring comes a rebirth and that is what we aim to do.
Thank you parents for taking the time to complete our survey. It is still open this week if you hadn't had the time to get to it. I understand how busy everyone is. The feedback is always welcome and what is needed to continue evolving and meeting the needs of our community. You all have been so supportive this past year and I just want to share our deepest gratitude for that.
OK, time for a quick recap from last week and a look at what is up up. Last Monday we kicked off the virtual Scholastic Book Fair. You can still purchase books online until March 7th. Also, we rallied to show our support for anti-bullying last Wednesday by wearing pink on National Pink Shirt Day. Mrs. Thelen spent time going around to different classes to discuss bullying and how we can prevent it from happening and most importantly report it when we see it to any adult on campus. Then, we ended the week by honoring our student's of the month. These students were recognized for the character trait of Fairness from our Character Counts program. Students are given the opportunity to vote for their peers for these awards. Those selected received a certificate and a treat curtesy of PTO and of course your generous donations. Also, Friday afternoon students celebrated with some cotton candy and a refreshing gatorade as part of PTO's Fun Friday event. Special thank you to our President Mrs. Palichuk and her team for volunteering their time to provide this experience for our students.
Coming up this week, the scholastic book fair continues through Sunday March 7th. Also, this week is Read Across America Week in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday (see below for details). Tuesday, there is a student council meeting in Mrs. Murrieta's room at 7:30am. On Wednesday there is a site council meeting at 3:30pm in the media center. If you are not currently a member of the site council but wish to attend please contact the front office and let them know. Also, its family food night at Someburros. Come on down and get some great tasting Mexican food. And Thursday is the final day to get in your AR tests for 3rd Quarter, be sure to have them completed if you want them to count for this quarter's dog tags. Lastly, we are resuming in person school tours before and after school for anyone that may be interested in attending Carlson next year. If you know anyone interested please have them contact the front office and they will schedule it.
Just a couple reminders; 5th and 6th grade parents, next Monday we are viewing the district's Human Growth and Development video. This is a voluntary opt in program. Students need a signed permission slip to view the material. Female students will be with their homeroom teachers and male students will be with me in the MPR. Anyone, not viewing will be able to work in the media center or computer lab. Also, Friday March 12th is the last day for students this quarter and they will return on Tuesday, March 23rd. Also, state testing is coming up in April. This year students will be taking the AZM2 (formerly known as AZMerit) during the week of April 5th. This will be a paper pencil test for all students in grades 3 - 6. And on Tuesday April 13th 5th Grade is taking the AZSCI exam. Please be sure to schedule any appointments around this week. More info will be coming but we wanted to give you advanced notice so you can try and block off those dates on your calendar. Again thank you for the continued support this year. I hope you all are staying well and have a wonderful week!
Gratefully,
Mr. Morgan
