The Glacier Bear Connection
SHERROD ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTER VOL 22.21
JANUARY 9, 2023
Until further notice: No bus services for Sherrod and Swanson
on Mondays
Glacier Bear Families,
Happy New Year! I trust your winter break was filled with great memories, lots of laughter and a renewed urgency to make the best of every day! I am excited to start this second semester and I look forward to working with you and your child in making this a very memorable, productive school year!
No bus days are NO fun days for parents....I am so sorry that the no bus Monday's is continuing into second semester. I wanted to offer a resource in an effort to hopefully reduce your wait time in the mornings. The bus loop is often empty during parent drop off. Feel free to drop your Sherrod only students off via the bus loop. I hope this little change will help alleviate the congestion we have at 10:00 am on Monday mornings. **Please pull forward as far as you can, in the bus loop, to help us release as many students as possible.
Afternoon parent pick up will remain the same. Sherrod only students will be picked up in front of our school.
If you have any questions, please contact me at 761-4102 or via email Lorri.cook@matsuk12.us.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to make the most of our academic day!

Message from Ms. Cooper, Music Teacher
Dear Sherrod Parents,
All 4th and 5th grade students will be using soprano recorders in their music classes starting January 26th.
Each student will need their own recorder. (Sharing passes germs) Students will be asked to practice at home as well as in class. I have recorders to sell now and will order more if necessary. The cost of a recorder purchased from Sherrod is $5.00. Other recorders can be found at Matanuska Music in Wasilla for $8-$10 or you can purchase them from Amazon. If you order from Amazon please purchase the Baroque fingered recorder Tudor, Canto, Peripole, or Yamaha brands. Students who choose not to purchase a recorder will have access to a school one. These are washed every day for use in class, but your student will not be able to take it home.
If you have a recorder at home purchased from Wal-Mart or Fred Meyer, please send it to school so I can inspect it. I will look to see if it has the correct mouthpiece and finger holes. Some of the less expensive recorders can be great to play alone but will not match the sound quality of the class level recorders. To keep me from going bonkers from clashing sounds and squeaks, you may need to up-grade to a better model.
Learning to play the recorder has many benefits. Among them are the enjoyment and satisfaction of learning to play an instrument, improvement of listening skills, the process of note reading, working with others, and the feeling of accomplishment.
You may purchase the recorder using the school pay system. Recorders will be distributed to students on the first day of the recorder unit. I have some simple rules for us to learn on the first day that will keep the recorder safe and maintain order in the school. Please contact the office if you have trouble with the payment system. You can pay with cash, but your child will need to wait till the first lesson before receiving the recorder.
You may pay by credit card or e-check by logging into your ParentVue account, selecting your student then “Fees” and “Pay Fees.” Select the activity you wish to purchase. We still accept payment for activities by cash or personal check if you are unable to pay online.

Please help your child to bring winter outerwear EVERY DAY.
Send your child with appropriate winter gear including a warm coat, snow pants, boots, a hat, and gloves. Per district policy, students will be going outside for recess to 10 below zero.
Hoodies and tennis shoes are not appropriate winter gear, especially when the temps get below freezing.
Appropriate gear will help to ensure your child enjoys his/her time at recess this winter.

Message from Nurse Emily
See the checklist below to help determine if your child is too sick to attend school:
- Does your child have a fever of 100 deg F or higher?
- Has your child vomited two or more times in a 24-hour period?
- Does your child have diarrhea?
- Are your child's eyes crusty, bright red, and/or discharging yellow or green fluid (pink eye)?
- If your child complains of a sore throat, is it accompanied by fever, headache, stomachache, or swollen glands?
- Does your child have a persistent, phlegmy cough?
- Does your child have lice (white, translucent eggs the size of a pinpoint on the hair or insects on the scalp)?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, please keep your child home from school and consider seeking medical attention. Your child could have a serious or contagious illness. Keep your child home until he or she has been symptom free for at least 24 hours or until a doctor indicates that he or she may return to school. If you have any questions please contact Nurse Emily 761-4103
VIRTUE OF THE WEEK

Commitment is caring deeply about something or someone. It is the willingness to give your all to a friendship, task, or something you believe in. It is the ability to make decisions and follow through on them. It is keeping your promises.
