March STEAM Tidbits
It’s time for another update from the STEAM room.
Pre-K:
Students in Pre-K are learning all about healthy habits. We’ve investigated the importance of nutrition, exercise, and visiting the doctor. Students have made models of the mouth when learning about teeth and dentist visits. They’ve also made a model of an eyeball when learning about eye health and visits to optometrists.
Kindergarten:
Students in Kindergarten are learning all about forces and have been able to play lots of games that involve pushes, pulls, or both. They’ve also explored how collisions can occur when two objects crash into each other.
1st Grade:
Students in 1st grade finished up their light and sound unit by constructing emergency poles that could be placed along trails that lost hikers could use to alert others to their location. They are now jumping into their unit on animal adaptations.
2nd Grade:
Students in 2nd grade had a lot of fun creating with STEAM Bins before starting their Grids and Games coding unit. They are currently programming a score keeper using Scratch Jr. on the iPads.
3rd Grade:
Students in 3rd grade are working on their Science of Flight unit. They learned all about balanced and unbalanced forces, and are now applying their understanding of thrust, drag, lift, and weight to paper gliders.
4th Grade:
Students in 4th grade just finished up their unit on energy conversion by constructing compound machines to move boxes (erasers) from one location to another. They constructed their machines using tank treads and other pieces from our VEX kits.
5th Grade:
Students in 5th grade have launched their Patterns in the Universe space unit. They are learning all about stars’ apparent and absolute magnitude, as well as how shadows can change throughout the day, depending on the location of the light source. They are now completing a series of investigations to explore predictable patterns due to Earth’s rotation and revolution.
STEAM Supplies: None Currently Needed
Thank you again for all of the STEAM supply donations. We are now fully stocked with boxes, tubes, and all sorts of other goodies.

News from P.E.
The final tally is in and I'm proud to announce that Alward Elementary raised $15,370.49 for the American Heart Association through our Kids Heart Challenge fundraising event! We celebrated by having a jump rope party with stations, contests and even a disco ball!
The highest fundraiser in the school was Haley M. followed by the brother/sister duo, Elsie A. and Decker A. Great job, everyone!
From now until spring break we will be working on basketball skills like dribbling, BEEF shooting, cold defense, pivoting and passing.
