Weekly Update
From Ms. Lakos and Mrs. Stevens
What's The Scoop
Science: Students began their force and motion unit. They started by going around the room, and identifying which objects spin, slide or roll. They also identified which motions were pulling motions and what motions were pushing motions-- they reenacted both concepts with classroom objects, and were able to observe both pushing and pulling in action. We also discussed the role energy plays in creating and sustaining motion. Students learned vocabulary words like
force motion position change movement pull push and mass.
Reading:
This week we read a newspaper article about the same school that we read about last week. We were able to compare and contrast the two different types of texts as well as the features shown such as headings, photographs, and charts. We are working on a project where we get to design our dream school. Some students are doing this using a computer program and others are choosing to draw their school. These projects will be due on Friday, February 3rd.
Writing:
Students practiced taking notes this week as they researched historical figures. Students then began using their research to create a biographical folder. This week they focused on drawing illustrations of important events and writing captions. Next week they will be making a timeline and recognizing character traits that these people displayed.
Phonics:
We are beginning to study vowel teams. This week we focused on long a, e, and i vowel teams. Next week we will review these as well.
Bible: Students learned the story of Queen Esther. and discussed what courage means, in the face of oppression. We examined the risk Esther took in approaching the king, and in asking him to spare the Jewish people. We discussed opportunities that we can all take to stand up for ourselves and others even if we risk losing friends or anything else. We also considered what kind of people we should go to for advice, in the way that Esther went to Mordecai.
Memory Verse:
