Healthy Snacks!
PLEASE REMEMBER TO PACK YOUR CHILD A HEALTHY AND MESS FREE SNACK EACH DAY.
Did you know that a snack at the right time between meals can prevent major hunger pangs and gives a child an energy boost to keep him or her studying and playing hard at school?
What is your child learning this week?
Phonics: Students will continue blending phonemes into words. Phoneme blending is the ability to hear the individual sounds in a word, put the sounds together, and say the word that is made. For example, these sounds may be said to a student -/sss/, /aaa/, /nnn/, /d/ - and the student will say the word “sand”. Activity at home: Talking in "Robot Talk," students hear segmented sounds and put them together (blend them) into words and the use of Elkonin Boxes let students map the blending or segmenting they are doing onto a visual representation. We will also be adding the following sight words: as, red, that, our. Please make sure you are working on the new sight words weekly, plus the sight words found in their daily folder. Ways to practice sight words at home: Tape index cards with sight words on them on the ceiling or on a wall. Use painter’s tape so it doesn’t damage the wall. Turn the lights off, and have your child shine the light on a word and read it
Grammar : In Grammar, we are continuing to work on writing a complete sentence. This week we are really focusing on the fact that each sentence has a subject and a verb. We are teaching students that a sentence is a complete thought. It always starts with an uppercase letter and ends with an end mark, like a period. Writers use complete sentences to help make their message clear and that a complete sentence includes a subject and a verb. The subject has a noun that tells who or what the sentence is about and the verb tells what that person or thing is doing or did.
Reading: The students will be exploring different nonfiction stories and their text features. Text features are the different parts of a nonfiction or fiction text other than the text. They help us understand the story better and help us locate information. Text features can include table of contents, the index, captions, bold words, illustrations, photographs, glossary. labels, graphs, diagrams, charts. We will also be reviewing authors purpose and central idea and key details.
Writing- Students have learned about what research is and what sources can be used for research. This week students will learn how to gather information from books and internet sources to learn more about their animals. On Thursday students will synthesize all they have learned from the week and begin to organize their findings into a graphic organizer. This will guide students into the next step of the research process; writing their research paper.
Math- this week we are going to continue learning about 2D shapes. Last week we learned about circles, triangles, Squares, rectangles, Rhombus, and trapezoid. This week we are going to further our learning about those shapes and include how to identify them by sides and vertices. We are going to explore further into real life objects that look like them and what other items/pictures we can make out of those shapes.
Social studies Please remind your student that we are still trying to support the VA with a sock drive. Please use the link to donate. If you have donated please screenshot a picture to your teacher and we will hang a paper sock in our Kinder Pod. http://www2.heart.org/goto/PrestwickSTEMAcademy
In social studies, students will begin to learn about important historical figures that have affected Texas history. Students will first need to understand what makes a good citizen and why their contributions are important.
Science: We will be starting a new science unit, Plant and Animals and their needs. Students will observe why animals need air, water, food, space, and shelter and will be able to identify these needs. They will be able to identify parts of animals that are important for them to survive in their habitat. (Parts for tasting(eating), smelling, hearing, moving, touching). Students will ask questions and make predictions on how changes in an animal’s environment will affect the animal. This week we will be learning about the basic needs of an animal (food, shelter, water). We will also learn how plants also need some of the same needs.
