Message from Mr. Hearn (Interim Principal)
Hello Westgate Families,
As this last year has reminded us, life is full of unexpected changes, even for kids. From everyday challenges to traumatic events, children face adversity just as adults do. Resilience is the ability to adapt well (or “bounce back”) in the face of stress and adversity and it is a skill children can learn. As we transition to summer break, I want to provide you with a few ways to build resilience:
Healthful living: Making sure your child gets ample sleep, regular exercise, nutritious food, and limited screen time establishes a necessary foundation for resilience.
Social connection: A strong family network, the presence of other caring adults, and peer engagement all provide social support and strengthen children’s resilience. Spend time together doing activities your child enjoys (i.e. board games, reading, puzzles, biking, hiking).
Helping others: Finding ourselves in stressful situations that we can’t control often results in feeling helpless, while serving others can be very empowering. Something as simple as bringing some cookies to an isolated neighbor or having daily household chores can help children feel a sense of purpose and value.
We need community voice for our 2021-2022 Equity Team:
- We value our community and would love your participation in Westgate's Equity Committee. The purpose of the Equity Committee is to increase cultural competence across staff, empower families, and review the following: current policies and procedures, current decision-making processes, allocation of time, and community engagement strategies in an effort to reduce inequities across the school, particularly for those communities that have historically been underserved. Increasing equity results in greater access for all students and in turn help reduce the achievement and opportunity gap.
- We will meet June 22nd from 2:30-3:15ish via Zoom and then on a monthly basis next school year. Please let me know if you're interested and willing to commit your time to this important work via my email or phone call @ 425-431-7474.
Westgate Elementary is committed to providing a safe and joyful learning for all of our students. Please do not hesitate to call me @ 425-431-7474 or email me or call the Westgate office @ 425-431-7470. We are here to help!
Warmly,
Mr. Hearn, Interim Principal at Westgate Elementary
