All About...
Harriet Smith
Harriet Smith
Harriet Smith is a " very pretty girl... short, plump, and fair, with a fine bloom, blue eyes, light hair, regular features, and a look of sweetness" (Austen 20). The second she saw Emma she looked up to her instantaneously and Emma saw her as a new friend and project. Harriet does not know who her parents are because someone had placed her at Mrs. Goddard's school at a very young age (19). Because of the way she is raised, she is sweet, poor, kindhearted, and sees Mr. Robert Martin, a farmer, very soulful and really likes him. However, because of the influence of Emma, Harriet is unable to make the choice she truly wants: Mr. Martin. She is dramatic and young enough to need help making difficult the decisions.
