Baseball "does Damage" in MIAA Round 1!
This year's baseball squad has been an absolute pleasure to coach. They have great chemistry and play every game to the very last out. Last Thursday we had a very dramatic come from behind win over Nashoba to win the league title. Kasey Griffiths hit a homerun to tie the game in the 6th. We scored a run in the 7th inning to pull ahead. Brendan Ferrari threw a complete game. Doug Tompkins made the final out of the game by leaping up and robbing a would-be game tying homerun. An unbelievable finish to a league championship game!
On Thursday, we had our first round playoff game against Doherty. We won 5-4 behind another great pitching performance by Brendan Ferrari. In the bottom of the 7th, Brendan Ferrari singled in Jared Whitby for the winning run. Our next match-up is Monday at 4:00 at Saint Peter Marian High School.
We finished the regular season at 12-6. We have 4 players that were selected as Mid-Wach B All-Stars including the league MVP. The Lowell Sun and Worcester Telegram All-Stars have yet to be announced but these boys below will be prime candidates for those teams as well.
Mid-Wach B All-Stars (only 13 spots for 5 teams)
1) Brendan Ferrari Junior, P/RF/SS (League MVP) .354 BA, .450 OBP, 9 BB, 9 SB, 17H, 15R, 8 RBI. Pitching 5-2 Record with 1 Save. 2.01 ERA, .191 BAA. CG wins over Nashoba twice, Wachusett (shutout), and Doherty yesterday in playoffs. Brendan also had the game winning walkoff hit in this game.
2) Kasey Griffiths, Senior, Captain, 1B, .407 BA, .464 OBP, .678 SLG, 24 H, 2 HR, 22 R, 8 BB, 9 SB, 16 RBI
3) Jared Whitby, Junior, SS/P .365 BA, .438 OBP, 9 SB, 23 H, 16 R, 9 BB, 8 RBI. Very strong defensive SS. Smooth swinging lefty hitter. Can play 2B. 3-2 Record on the mound 1.45 ERA
4) Isaac Zhang, Freshman CF/P .458 BA, .525 OBP, 22 H, 17 RBI, 12 R,8 BB, 7 SB. Smooth swinging lefty hitter. Most of Isaac's hits are line drives. Most productive freshman season in my tenure. Just crazy offensive stats. 1-0 Record on the mound with a 3.36 ERA
Honorable Mention
Joe O'Malley, Junior 3B/SS .312 BA, .392 OBP, 9 SB, 20 H, 9 BB, 15R, 11 RBI. Very high baseball IQ. One of the best infielders I have ever coached. He plays 3B, SS, 2B. Joe has made very big defensive plays for us all year.
