Picnic Time Fun

Fun, Fun, Fun

We capped off our Spring Fun Unit with our Annual Family Picnic. The children, teachers and I were so excited that the weather cooperated. We were able to have our picnic outside! In preparation of our picnic we read Miss Mary Mack adapted by Mary Ann Doberman and The Ants Go Marching illustrated by Jeffrey Scherer.

Dirt Cups

The children had a blast making dirt cups. We read a recipe and then we re-read it and followed the directions. The children used their math skills to count and add materials to their individual dirt cups. Everyone started by placing 2 oreo cookies in a ziplock bag. Once we confirmed the ziplock bag was securely closed we had a choice of using a wooden hammer, wooden mallet or a rolling pin to squish the cookies into tiny dirt pieces. The children counted out and added 3 spoonfuls of mud (chocolate pudding) and the topping of course was 2 organic gummy worms! Yummy, yummy... what is not to like?

Growing and coloring

Our flower seeds have now become seedlings. We plan on taking them outside next week and planting them in the planter box . We are in need of some top soil. If you would like to make a donation of top soil to our program you can leave them on the playground next to our classroom door. The lily bulb we planted as a class has really grown! The children have enjoyed comparing the length/height of the bulb from its beginnings till now. That little piece of blue ribbon on our frog garden stick is the original height measurement.

Literacy Fun

We wrapped out our unit on Spring Time Fun with readings of The Ants Go Marching and The Icky Bug Alphabet Book by Jerry Pallotta and have headed to the beach. Our next and final unit explores the Oceans. We will be using our 5 senses to explore. The children had an opportunity this past week to look, touch, smell a starfish. We have read Fish Wish by Bob Barner, Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea by Jan Peck, Ten Little Fish by Audrey Wood and Sounds of the Wild Ocean by Maurice Pledger. We have sea turtles, crabs and shells in our sand table. In our water tables we have a variety of fish. Some of our favorites are the leafy seahorse, dolphins, sharks, jellyfish and of course ...the sea cucumber.
