Dmitry Medvedev elected as Russian President: March 2, 2008

When Vladimir Putin's 2 terms were coming to an end everyone was wondering who would be the next president of Russia. Dmitry Medvedev was elected in the 2008 election. He had experience with running the country because three years earlier he was appointed the post of First Deputy Prime Minister. People were excited for change. Even though Medvedev followed Putin's path he made changes relating to increased freedom.

Major Breakthrough in Cancer Research: Around December 17, 2009

Cancer is a deadly disease that effects many world wide. After lots of research scientist had unlocked the genetic code to two types of cancers. These included skin and lung cancer. Studies were being continued to find genetic mutations that would combat these cancers. After this many patients had personalized treatment based on the genetic coding that was found.

Africa's Population Reaches 1 Billion: Around August 20, 2009

In 2009 the continent of Africa reached the population of 1 billion. This is a very large amount of people for one continent to hold. The birth rates in Africa are very high and many countries, including Niger, have the highest birth rates in the world. The Population Reference Bureau is a non-profit based in Washington. They are the ones who found out and released this information. This is important because it shows how fast countries population and what it might look like in the future.

BP Gulf Oil Spill: April 20, 2010

On the 20th of April there was an explosion in an oil rig working in the deep water region of the Gulf of Mexico. Initially 11 people were killed and many more injured. There was a fire that burned and destroyed the oil rig. This released hydrocarbon, or gas, into the ocean. The BP gas company then thought they closed off the leakage of oil but they did not. More gas leaked into the ocean hurting and killing many plants and animals. The BP company and several other environmental groups worked together to try to save the wildlife.

Osama bin Laden was Killed: May 2, 2011

Osama bin Laden was the leader of the terrorist group Al Qaeda. He also was one of the men who planned the 911 attacks. The United States had been looking for him for about a decade when they finally found him. Two helicopters of United States Navy SEALs raided his compound hideout in Pakistan. They ended up killing him and 4 others.

Mars Science Laboratory Explores the Red Planet: August 5, 2012

The Mars Science Laboratory sent a rover to the planet to explore. The rovers name was Curiosity and it was searching for habitability in the red planet. It analysed the soil and rocks with the most advanced instruments ever used for scientific study. Landing technology was also very advanced for the time. A parachute was used to keep the rover safe before the exploration. This was the beginning of many more successful explorations to the red planet.

The Eurasian Union is Formed: January 2, 2015

This is a political and economic group consisting of 5 Eurasian countries. These countries are Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, and Kyrgyzstan. The idea of forming this union was brought up by former Russian president Vladimir Putin. This creates a single economic market between these countries. The Eurasian Union might allow countries like Finland, China, Bulgaria and more into this group because of close cultural and economic ties.
