Reptile Review
February 2022
Principal's Update
Hi Reptile Families,
Can you believe we are already in February? This school year is flying by. We do have many more exciting things happening this year. As a reminder, February 2nd is a 2 hour early release day.
The month of February serves as a reminder to focus on the things we love and how we treat others. To celebrate, New River will be participating in Kindness Week. Students and staff will focus on performing Random Acts of Kindness. We will also have dress up days to highlight the importance of treating others with kindness.
Have your child join us next week during Kindness Week:
Monday, February 14th –"Show Kindness to Others" - Wear pink, red, or hearts for Valentine's Day
Tuesday, February 15th – “Kindness Rocks”- Dress up like a rock star!
Wednesday, February 16th – “Powered by Kindness”- Dress up like your favorite superhero
Thursday, February 17th – “Peace, Love, and Kindness”- Wear tie dye or bright colors
Friday, February 18th – “Show Kindness from Head to Toe”- Wear crazy socks and hair
We had several students that participated in our District Science & Engineering Fair this past weekend and they did a fantastic job representing NRES! We are so proud of you!
Thank you for doing your part to help minimize the spread of COVID-19. As a reminder, please use the student screener each morning prior to sending your child to school.
Please reach out if you need anything.
Thank you,
Colleen Wilkinson
Principal

Odyssey of the Mind
It is an exciting time for all the New River Odyssey of the Mind teams! The competition is being held at Weightman Middle school on Saturday, February 26th. This year we have 2 teams. The team members are Addy Basinger, Benny Basinger, Caleb Campbell, Avery McDowell, Dezirae Gardner, Joey Goforth, Kandace Harris, Rae Moline, Mackenzie Raines, Graham Shockley, Jace Smith, Liam Smith and Emmy Wilkinson! Wish them all luck! They will be amazing, and I cannot wait to see them perform!
If you have never heard of Odyssey of the Mind, it is a creative problem-solving program involving students from kindergarten through college. Team members work together to solve a long-term problem and present their solution to the problem at a competition. If this sounds like something your child would love, the new teams will form in the fall of next school year!

Music News
1st-2nd Grade: Students have begun preparing their spring musical, Pajama Party. This performance will be at 7:00pm on Wednesday, April 20th at the Wesley Chapel Center for the Arts.
3rd Grade: We are distributing recorders this week during music class. If you have sent in the recorder form, your student may take theirs home to practice and keep it after we complete our unit. If you did not return the form, your student will not be able to keep theirs. Thanks to the generosity of many of you, we have a sizable scholarship fund! If you have been waiting due to the cost, please send the form back and mark “I would like assistance in purchasing an instrument” so we can use the scholarship funds for your student. Extra forms are available in the front office.
4th-5th Grade: Students are learning new, complex rhythms & melodies through a variety of instruments, including ukulele. We have a class set of ukuleles, but your student may bring a ukulele from home, if desired.

In art class, primary students have started the color unite and have started to work with mixed media while using watercolors and crayons to create a picture using their imagination.
Intermediate students have also started the color unit and have created a color book to learn and review color theory concepts. Students have also started to use watercolors and different size brushes to create a picture of their choice.
