Community School Summit
To celebrate the success of “community school” models at Agnes E. Little and Henry J. Winters elementary schools, inform the public of how these initiatives benefit students and their families and discuss how to grow the program, a Community School Summit was held on November 29th.
Representatives from the Pawtucket School Department, city government, the Rhode Island Federation of Teachers and Health Professionals, the American Federation of Teachers, other school districts and organizations attended the day-long event with various sessions. The Pawtucket Teachers’ Alliance, Pawtucket School Department and Rhode Island Federation of Teachers and Health Professionals have worked over the past two years to establish the “community schools” initiative in Pawtucket at Agnes Little and Henry J. Winters with the intention to grow the model throughout the city and across the state.
Programs before and after school at Agnes Little and Winters have already proven to improve student attendance and engagement. Initiatives include the “Walking School Bus,” where teachers meet students in their neighborhoods at “bus stops” in the morning to walk to school together, curbing absenteeism and tardiness, and “Homework Diners,” where parents and students receive adult educational support and homework strategies, respectively, before joining together for a meal served in the cafeteria.
Pawtucket Teachers’ Alliance President, Ronald Beaupre, said, "The community schools initiative has been a true labor management partnership between the Pawtucket Teachers' Alliance and the Pawtucket School Department. With only one meeting, Superintendent Patti DiCenso and I understood the benefits of forging this partnership to bring the community school model to Pawtucket public schools. As a result, we were able to garner much needed financial and program support from the AFT Innovation Fund (American Federation of Teachers), the RI Federation of Teachers and Health Professionals and the district, and the community school model was initiated … I can't wait to see what we continue to do, hand-in-hand, throughout the Pawtucket School Department."
Superintendent Patti DiCenso said, “There is a new sense of connectedness and shared responsibility in our community school model that empowers staff, students, families and community partners. Our teachers are a critical component to the growth and development of our children along with their families. I am grateful Mr. Beaupre and his leadership team partnered with the district to start a new era in Pawtucket. Every school should be a community school.”
Attendees of the summit event participated in several sessions and programs, including experiencing the “Walking School Bus” at Little and/or the “Homework Diner” at Winters, or attending information and planning sessions at Le Foyer.
Thank you to all who attended this event and support Pawtucket's Community Schools!
