The Voting Rights Act
Lyndon Johnson has been president ever since the assassination of John F. Kennedy last year. After he won the election, Johnson went to do something about voting rights. The southern states had taken away the right to vote for millions of African-American citizens. Johnson made a speech in March urging a national legislative solution. Back in March, the police attacked non-violent civil right marchers, which aroused public opinion in favor of the voting rights legislation. The act was signed about 3 months ago, which took down literacy tests and poll taxes, which is what Southern Whites were using to keep the blacks from voting. The Voting Rights Act also required any states to submit any changes of the voting laws to the Justice Department for approval.
