THHS Student Testifies on Sentate Floor
On February 14th, Tulalip Heritage High School's own Image Enick testified on the Senate floor of the Education Committee. He spoke in favor of House Bill 1332 requiring the implementation of the Since Time Immemorial curriculum be implemented in all schools throughout the State of Washington in partnership with their local tribes. Image gave a powerful testimony:
haʔɬ dadatu; Good Morning
My name is Image Mercury Morris Enick and I am a Tulalip Tribal Member and senior at Tulalip Heritage High School.
I am in support of House Bill 1332.
My community resides on the sovereign lands of the Tulalip Tribes. As a student at Tulalip Heritage High School, I have the opportunity to engage in my culture, which helps me to better connect with who I am. At school, I have had the chance to explore my Tribal culture such as taking my Lushootseed (Tribal language classes), Beading, Cedar Stripping, and Basket Weaving. I am also a Tribal drummer and singer. I have made two Native American drumming and singing CDs as a product of my learning and growth.
This Bill is important to all of the youth no matter their background so that they have a better understanding of the hardships our ancestors had endured. But, more importantly, to name the gifts our culture has to offer. This bill is also important to Native American Youth, as it gives them a chance to build a connection with their culture, especially if their family does not have a chance to practice it. Telling the story of how our Native culture and beliefs were almost lost and how our culture survived and thrived is critical.
We will fully revive it. AND Bills like this provide the opportunity to honor our ancestors and ensure future generations never lose sight of who we are.
Image is a Senior at Tulalip Heritage High School. He is pursuing his interests and passions in his culture and is on track to be another Tulalip Heritage Graduate this year!
