Learning Updates for this Month
Kindergarten: Our kindergarten students have adjusted well to West Godwin! Our phonics lessons are focusing on orally blending sounds together to form words, rhyming and learning letter names and sounds. In math we are developing number sense by using math tools called five frames and ten frames. We are working on reading and writing numbers 0-10 along with counting to 20 forwards and backwards. Kindergartners are familiarizing themselves with books and beginning to tell stories and write (or draw) about them.
First Grade: Not only have our first graders been focusing on building a love for reading during reader's workshop, but they will also be focusing on using strategies to figure out unknown words. In writing, we are working on revising to make our personal narrative stories the best they can be! In math, we are working on building a strong number sense by seeing numbers in ten frames and on number racks quickly and making combinations for five and ten. We are also starting to be strong math story problem-solvers.
Second Grade: In writing, second graders are working on daily journaling to build their stamina. We are doing as much reading as possible and are working on a reading unit called Bedtime Tales. We are focusing on strategies for sounding out words as we read. In math, second graders are building their skills to tell time, add within 20, and understand the place value of numbers. Our math unit is all about measuring and place value and is about Jack and the Beanstalk.
EL: EL support groups have started! Students will receive support based on their language levels, which was sent home at the beginning of the year. Flocabulary, which is a computer based vocabulary program, will also help support EL learning in the building.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL): This week in Social Emotional Learning, all students will be learning about feelings and some of the different verbal and non-verbal cues used to identify feelings!
Practice these skills at home using the following resources: Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd GradeHarvest Festival Fun
