Team Building Day Team Building Day is a day full of cooperative activities and games. The activities will focus on helping students work on talking things through, listening to each other, and problem solving. In order for the day to be successful, we are looking for a few good volunteers. We will need approximately 10-15 adult volunteers to make this day go smoothly. Please check the times below to see when you might be available. If you are willing to volunteer, please fill out the form below and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher as soon as possible. Volunteers will be in charge of running and explaining games to the classes as they rotate throughout the day. | Wall of Honor In honor of Veteran's Day we want to send a reminder that students may bring in any photos of family members or friends who have served or are currently serving in the US military. We will add these photos to our Wall of Honor in the breezeway. Please make sure that the name of the veteran is on the back of the photo and that the picture is a copy (not an original photo). Photos sent in will not be returned. |

First Grade Thanksgiving Feast
It has been a tradition at Herbert Mills that the first graders study the history of Thanksgiving by studying about the events that led up to the First Thanksgiving Celebration between the Pilgrims and the Indians. The first graders learn about why the Pilgrims left their homes in England and the conditions that they faced upon their arrival in America. First graders learn how Squanto became a friend to the Indians and helped them in many ways. First graders compare their life with the lives of the Pilgrim children and discuss how in some ways they are similar and in some ways they are very different. As a culminating activity, the first grade teachers and their students prepare and share a traditional American Thanksgiving Feast. The menu for the feast includes turkey, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, pumpkin pie, a fruit and jello dessert, and a drink. In addition to the feast, each first grader dresses as either a Pilgrim or an Indian to attend the feast. This Feast has been a tradition since at least 1987 and both the students and teachers look forward to it each year. This year, the first grade students will feast on Tuesday, November 25.
