Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month was established in 1949 to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans’ lives. We have all witnessed the effects that the COVID-19 epidemic has had on our communities, representing an acceleration of the mental health trends observed prior to 2020. At Souhegan, we have made a commitment to supporting our youth by openly discussing mental health topics, destigmatizing help seeking, and sharing tips and resources. As a parent, it can be difficult to open up conversations about mental health. Please feel free to reach out to student services to discuss your student, or use these tip sheets as a guide.

Make sure to check Google classroom for community service opportunities. Maren has received a number of requests from community organizations that she is posting. Seniors, please log your hours asap. Seniors must meet the graduation requirement of 20 hours by May 27th. Please see Jon Barry if you need assistance.

As we are approaching graduation, please remember that students who are engaged in VLACS courses must complete them by May 25th. Transcripts from VLACS must be received by June 8th. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to see Maren Petropulos in student services.

Senior Projects

Senior Project Presentation Days are May 19 and 20.

Click here for a schedule of presentations!

Senior Book Returns

As seniors near the end of classes, they should return library materials and instructional texts as soon as they finish with them. Returning texts incrementally will help prevent bottlenecks for text return and hopefully make their lives easier as they approach graduation. We encourage all seniors to stop by the Info Center and make sure they know exactly what is on their account. Seniors must have all library and instructional materials returned (or paid for) to be eligible to receive their cap and gowns prior to graduation.

SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS

Marine Science

On Friday, May 6th, 2022 Marine Science students visited Odiorne Point State Park in Rye, New Hampshire to study the rocky shore. Throughout the year, students have been learning about our local ocean, the Gulf of Maine and its importance as a highly productive ecosystem. Students have been developing their own inquiry questions and during the field trip, collected field data to address their questions. Students investigated the abundance of invasive crab and periwinkles species, collected samples of microplastics, looked at the distribution of seaweed species, inventoried the biggest sources of marine debris and more. The Gulf of Maine is facing many threats such as warming water temperatures and shift currents and the data the students collected helps us better understand these changes that are taking place. Some of the students’ research will be shared with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, the Seacoast Science Center and the Blue Ocean Society.

Robotics

Field Day Fundraiser

Come help us put on a Field Day Fundraiser this August!

Sabers, we have a great community service opportunity for you this summer.

Move Up Global is a non-profit working to improve access to health care and education in rural Rwanda. They currently work on programs at a Primary School with over 1000 students. So far, they brought the school electricity, computers, internet, clean drinking water and a soap making program. But one thing the students do not have is any sports equipment.

We are putting together a Field Day on August 12 at Souhegan to raise money for Rwandan Sports Equipment.

We would love to have the Saber athletes lead this effort. Tasha Tower (you may know her from AMS) is the liaison and she needs some reps from each team to organize events. We were hoping each sports team would run one event at the field day. If you are interested in giving a little time to this over the summer, please contact Tasha at tashatowermug@gmail.com by May 31.
