Counselor's Corner- A Note From Miss Livers
Coping with Change
Life stage transitions or changes are inevitable, and can be hard for many children. Change can bring out different feelings such as excitement mixed with nerves and fear. It is now the time of year where our 5th grade students are preparing to move up from elementary and transition into middle school. Students in all grades may be experiencing changes and transitions in their life too.
Ways to help your child prepare for personal or academic transitions
- Invite them to talk about their feelings. Listen to what they have to say— anger and sadness and confusion. Validate their feelings and let them know that whatever they’re experiencing is ok.
- Help them see the elements of stability in their life and school. List all the things at school or home that will remain the same.
- Direct children to see what they are in control of. Unwelcome change makes people feel like they don’t have control over their lives. Ask your students or children, “What are you free to choose right now?” and they’ll be reminded of their own power.
- Guide children to focus on a positive future and what might be possible a year from now. Help them imagine making new friends, forming strong connections with other adults, and finding joy, community, and fulfillment. If there’s anything they can do to make these things happen (such as making new friends) guide them to do those things.
- Set aside a brief time for worry. Especially if you have a child who worries all the time, suggest a 15-minute time during the day when they allow themselves to worry. When they start worrying at other times, remind them that it isn’t their designated worry time.
- Ask children: What really matters here? Help them see the big picture, gain perspective, and keep the change in proportion.
- Help them connect with their own resilience, coping mechanisms, and energy. They have dealt with change and challenge before. Help them access those resources and remind them that they will get through this latest challenge.
- Help them see their own resources for making changes that they desire. Help them think about how to be proactive about creating the kind of experience they want, even in the face of unwelcome change.

Birthday Treats-MUST be prepackaged, ONLY
At this time, we will allow Birthday Treats to be brought to school. We are required to inform you of the Healthy Eating Guidelines (see below) and suggest that you use this when selecting a treat. Whatever you choose, please note that all treats brought to school for the purpose of sharing with others, need to be prepackaged so we are able to know and see the ingredients list. There are many students who have a variety of food allergies and having the ingredients listed helps the school nurse determine if a student with allergies can eat a particular treat.

Lunch Visitor Update
As we near the end of the school year and things seem to remain stable with all things COVID related, we are going to attempt to resume more “normalcy” for our students. Beginning the week after Spring Break, we will allow a limited number of parents to join students for lunch. Below you will find a link to sign up for a time slot. There will be 5 slots available per grade level, per school day. Due to limited seating, only one person per student may sign up. To be fair to other parents, please do not sign up for more than one slot.
Once we have a chance to evaluate the seating with the additional parents, we will consider increasing the number of parents permitted to come in each day. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation and look forward to seeing you in the building soon!

Each class will have an assigned time and will participate in these specials in a rotating sequence. One huge benefit will be that no special will regularly be missed because of school holidays. Your child’s teacher will let you know your child’s exact schedule. Be sure to check the breakfast menu to see what “day” we are on!
