A Message from Ms. Welch
We are just a few days away from the start of the 2020-21 school year and I am so excited to see all our student's faces online in just a short amount of time. This past week, all staff engaged in over 24 hours of professional development around launching our school year, student engagement, and planning during remote learning. Additionally, staff engaged in a full-day of technology training and then professional learning for Equity and Educational Justice and mental health supports. I will speak for our staff that we were all exhausted at the conclusion of this week, but we are ready to support our students and engage back in teaching and learning. We know how to teach and we know how to love our students!
I want to thank you for your patience as you are navigating our new technology platforms: Clever and Schoology. We are learning right with you. There are things I don't have answers to, so we need to reach out to the technology department to help uncover answers. We are doing this work as fast as we can, and please know technology is also working so hard to support our district. I thank you for your kindness and understanding as we all learn our new tools together.
Our first three weeks of school will begin with family conferences (including our students!) and these will allow our staff to focus on building relationships with students and you. This is a time for us to learn more about your family and each of our students. Teachers have shared links with families to schedule your family meeting with them. Please do schedule a time to meet. This is so very important! We are looking forward to a very thoughtful and intentional launch to our year.
Daily attendance is an expectation for all students. If your child needs to attend class by viewing the recorded lessons, please be sure to let your classroom teacher know before each morning for the first 4 days of school. Although the preferred method for students to demonstrate attendance is live participation, we understand that this does not work for all families. Thank you for your patience as we gear up for the 2020-21 school year. With the year beginning in 100% remote learning, it is critical that parents, caregivers, and students are able to access the variety of systems that we will be using for teaching and learning and for communication. Please read this email completely to ensure that you have up to date information about logging into these systems.
Clever is our District’s new portal system. All parents and students have an account in Clever to help them get connected to all the other systems we will be using. Students and parents log into Clever differently.
Parents will log in to Clever at https://family.nsd.org.
The parent portal will give parents access to buttons for ParentVUE, Schoology, and other district systems. It also provides a method for helping students to get logged in on their device. This is called “Instant Login” and should be used only when a student has trouble logging themselves into Clever.
Parents were sent invitations to join Clever the week of August 17. If you did not receive your invitation, please visit https://family.nsd.org and click “Reset Password”. Enter the email associated with your Northshore account. An email will be sent with password reset information. If you have not received the email within 48 hours, please contact your school office.
Students will log in to Clever at https://my.nsd.org.
Student accounts follow this pattern: the username is their email address and their password is the password they ended last school year with or the default (for new students). Student accounts use the student’s ID number. If you do not know your student’s ID number please look at their information in ParentVUE. If you do not have a ParentVUE account, you can request an account and activation code here: https://form.jotform.com/200321140182132
Username is email@example.com, for example firstname.lastname@example.org
Their password is the password they used last year. If they don’t remember that password, a staff member can reset their password for them.
New student in grades K-3:
Username is email@example.com, for example firstname.lastname@example.org
Their password is their student id number followed by “nsd”. For example, 4444444nsd.
New student in grades 4-12:
Username is email@example.com, for example firstname.lastname@example.org
Their password is their 8-digit birthdate, for example 04042010.
Schoology is our district’s new Learning Management System. It replaces systems that were used last year to distribute class assignments and learning materials, such as Google Classroom. All parents have access to an account in Schoology to monitor student progress, view course materials and assignments, and communicate with teachers.
To login to Schoology, parents will login to Clever (https://family.nsd.org) and click on the Schoology for Parents tile. Enter your email and password. If you have not activated your account, click “Forgot your password” on the Schoology login screen. Enter the email associated with your Northshore account. An email will be sent with password reset information. If you have not received the email within 48 hours, please contact your school office.
Students will log into Schoology by logging into Clever (https://my.nsd.org) and clicking on the Schoology tile.
Commonly Reported Issues:
I cannot see all of my children in Clever/Schoology.
This is likely due to incomplete information in Synergy, our student information system. Please log into ParentVUE and review the information associated with your account to ensure that you can see all children and have all contact and educational rights to all of your students. If that information is correct, please contact your school’s main office to research further.
I never received an email invitation to Clever and/or Schoology.
Check your email spam and junk folders to ensure that the emails didn’t get misplaced. If you still don’t see those invitations, visit Clever and/or Schoology and use the “Reset My Password” or “Forgot your password” links to generate a new email from one or both systems.

Northshore Technology Orientations
Northshore is providing ongoing opportunities to learn about our Remote Learning model and to gain an understanding of these new systems and getting started with Clever and Schoology. We are actively updating our website with information based on questions we are getting from our community. To see the schedule of Orientations and to view other important information regarding device checkout, meals, and other programs, please visit https://www.nsd.org/northshore-learns/support.
To provide quick access, here is a list of parent orientation classes coming soon. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions through Q and A during each session. Sessions will be held at the following times:

News from the Heath Room & Nurse Audrey
Hello Cottage Lake families!
I am contacting all families of students who have life threatening conditions, or those who require health care plans, medications, or procedures during the school day - when on campus.
Although we have a remote start to this school year, we are still required to collect all health care planning documents, do all emergency care planning and individual health plans, collect medication authorizations and treatment orders at the start of the school year, as with any other school year. Obviously, we are not collecting medications at school until your student is able to attend on campus.
At the point when a transition can occur from online à on campus learning, we anticipate there may be a very short turn around. It will likely leave inadequate time for me to complete your child’s health plan, or for you to receive treatment orders and medication authorization forms in a timely manner from your provider. If we have all the paperwork in order, then when your child can return to campus, you simply bring the medication to school and we’re ready to go.
If your child attended Cottage Lake Elementary last year, had a life threatening condition, and/or required medications/procedures at school, a packet of forms was mailed to you at the end of May to complete for this school year. These can dropped off by appointment when they are completed (you stay in your car and we will come get them from you). You can be mail them to the school (attention: nurse); or your health care provider can fax any forms or medication authorizations directly to the school. If you need any documents, or can't find yours, please let me know and I can send an email with these attached.
I will have intermittent office hours on campus and can be reached at the number below. Or for the quickest response, please email me with any questions. My office phone, fax number and school address are below. Messages are checked often.

Phased Login times for families
An example of the phased login times is:
- 5th Grade: 8:30-8:35 AM
- 4th Grade: 8:35-8:40 AM
- 3rd Grade: 8:40-8:45 AM
- 2nd Grade: 8:45-8:50 AM
- 1st Grade: 8:50-8:55 AM
- Kindergarten: 8:55-9:00 AM
When students log in, they will be directed to the teacher's "waiting room." While there, students could be silent reading, finishing work for the class, helping a sibling log in, and/or waiting for class to start.
Please know teachers will not turn on their own cameras until 9:00AM.
Kindergarten start of school
Kindergarten teachers have collaborated together to front-load many of their critical family conferences to the first three days of school. We believe these conferences and easing into the school year is very important for our youngest Sailors. During the first three days, each morning will still start with a class meeting and this is where the teacher will take attendance, do something fun with their staff and share what students should be working on throughout the day. The Kindergarten teachers may also ask for students to come back at 3:00 PM for a closing class meeting circle, as well.
Overall, the first day of school for Kindergarten continues to be September 2. Teachers won't have as much time live with students due to conferences, but they will still provide items they can do through recorded activities or providing other links to websites, etc.
Students will spend a lot more time with their teacher with live learning and lessons beginning Tuesday, September 8.

- 9:00 AM - School begins! Welcome Back!! Teachers turn on their cameras and welcome students
- 9:00-11:00 AM - Students join teacher's Zoom link and teachers with students engaging in get to know you activities, beginning to teach routines, etc.
- 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM - Teacher lunch and planning. Students lunch & recess
- 1:00-1:45 PM - Cottage Lake Welcome assembly... virtually (More details to come)
- 1:45-2:00 PM - Student Break
- 2:00-3:30 PM - Students join back to their teacher's Zoom link for further classroom activities.
- 3:30 PM - Dismissal. See you tomorrow!

Childcare Options for Fall
Details for childcare during Northshore Learns 3.0 are now available! Please visit our website to review the information and pricing from our community partners, Northshore YMCA and Champions. You may register for either provider, but please know that space is limited.
The information is based on a Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) that is being finalized this week. The childcare providers have opened registration with the understanding that the MOU will be finalized before Sept. 2, 2020.
Cottage Lake will welcome the Northshore YMCA for onsite care.

Contacting the school office staff
If you find that you need assistance from our school office, please contact us via email. Our opportunities to work on site are limited and not consistent. All staff are required to obtain permission to be on campus, so if you are calling, you may not reach one of us in person. If you do call the main office, please leave a message if we do not answer. We are checking messages remotely and will get back to you as quickly as possible. If you'd like a quicker response, email is the best form of contact at this time.
At this time we ask that all students have the following items available as their learning tools:
- writing utensils (pencils or pens)
- colored markers
- glue sticks
- paper for note taking (loose or within a spiral-bound or composition notebook)
- an organization tool for their work (bins or boxes, a notebook, an accordion folder, etc).
Some teachers may also provide some additional materials at our Materials distribution time during the week of September 14. If you would like more information regarding school supples, Visit our School Supplies webpage to learn more.
The Northshore Schools Foundation is generously providing in-home school supply kits for families in financial need.
