We hope that you all had a restful and relaxing winter break, doing all of the things that you never have time for while school is in session.

This week, we'd like to focus on getting our students re-adjusted to life at Greenbrook. We will be going over everyday routines in the lunchroom, at recess, and would like you to revisit classroom expectations as well as behavior during transition times in your classroom and in the hallways while moving throughout the building.

Lunchroom and Recess Expectations

On Monday, we will be reviewing lunchroom procedures and expectations with students, as well as recess expectations and a practice line-up. Please bring your students to the lunchroom at the designated time. They will be going outside to review recess expectations when they finish in the lunchroom. It should all take less than 30 minutes.

New Recess Equipment and Procedures

We now have a recess cart with a lot of new recess equipment. Mr. Loda and I are in the process of creating some visuals that will demonstrate to students how equipment should be used and stored safely each day. The new cart will be maintained by staff for first recess, but we will have student helpers for second and third recess. An "application" process will likely be used to help determine which students can take on that responsibility. Be on the lookout for more information regarding recess procedures later this week.

Discipline Procedures, Reminders, and Support

We are in the process of making some changes to disciplinary procedures; however many of those changes require additional resources that may not be available to us until the next school year. While we undergo some changes, please remember that we are at recess and lunch to address any issues that arise in those environments. Please encourage your students to tell us about any concerns. If something occurs during those two times, they need to let the two of us know so that we can handle it.

Some of our students are at the point in the disciplinary matrix that they will now be receiving after school detentions and in school suspensions. It is important for us to remember that when we receive a disciplinary referral, our goal is to ensure that we process the concern with that student as efficiently as possible and then return them to class. We understand that there may be a few times when you just need a student to sit with us for a bit more time so that you too, can have a break. Please communicate that with us so that we can lessen the frustration that you may feel when a student returns to class.

If you ever have a question as to how a consequence was chosen, please come talk to us. Discipline is an area that can be frustrating and difficult at times for all of us, so it is important that we leave the communication lines open.
