Greetings Everyone,
While our winter weather takes a toll on each of us, the cold winter weather serves a very important purpose. The cold allows trees and plants to grow deeper roots and new branches. Spirituality speaking, winter offers us a powerful invitation for Lent.
Picture yourself this Lent as a tree in winter. The common Lenten practice of fasting can be likened to the winter pruning many trees require in order to maintain their health and vigorous growth. We fast from things that prevent us from fully becoming the person God created us to live as. Sometimes we each need to prune or fast from activities, distractions and negative people in our lives. The removal of these old or unhealthy "branches" can free us to grow to new depths and heights.
How do you understand yourself and see yourself growing and how do you see God’s presence in your life in new ways this Lent? Some of you are new to Nazareth and will soon find yourself pruning away old ways of seeing and doing things. Some of you are student teaching or have internships; going abroad to study or preparing to graduate. These are opportunities of new growth. Opportunities to meet new people, see new things and discover God’s presence in new ways in your life and world. College is a time to grow. It is a time to grow like a tree. It is a time to grow roots, deep roots, that provide you a healthy understanding of yourself and your gifts. Roots that will keep you grounded when the storms of life come. It is also a time to branch out, discover the beauty and diversity of the world and it's people.
What do you need to prune in order to make room for these new opportunities of growth? I pray that this Lent will bring each of you the courage and strength to prune and grow!
Lenten Peace,
~ Jamie
THREE Opportunities for Sacred Pauses THIS week!
NEW: Tuesday: Rosary Night: 8:30PM
The Rosary is a wonderful meditative prayer. It settles our hearts and minds. It puts things in perspective and allows us to see things as they really are. Rosarys and directions will be provided!
Wednesday: Mid-week Mass, 12:30PM
This Mass is shorter than a Sunday Mass, only about 25 minutes! What a wonderful way to find balance and spiritual nourishment in the middle of your busy week!
Thursday: Eucharistic Adoration and Compline, 8:00PM
Eucharistic Adoration is simply spending quiet time in the presence of Jesus. Compline is an evening prayer that settles the mind and heart and serves as a peaceful connection between one day or week and the next.
Each of these opportunities for quite and reflection will take place in Linehan Chapel.
Come again or for the first time!

Francis X. Clooney, S.J
In 2017, the Catholic Theological Society of America honored Francis X. Clooney, S.J., with the prestigious John Courtney Murray Award for a lifetime of theological achievement. As he accepted the award, Clooney said, "I had to find a way to be a Catholic theologian and take seriously this vast other world of Hinduism . . . I've had to invent the field to do the work I wanted to do." Hailed as a founder of modern comparative theology, "a discipline distinguished by attentiveness to the dynamics of theological learning deepened through the study of traditions other than one's own," Clooney is the Parkman Professor of Divinity and Professor of Comparative Theology at Harvard Divinity School. Before joining the Harvard faculty, he taught for more than 20 years at Boston College.
Clooney's countless books and articles include studies of the Sanskrit and Tamil traditions of Hindu India as well as pioneering forays into comparative theology. Among his recent publications are Comparative Theology: Deep Learning across Religious Borders (2011), His Hiding Place Is Darkness: A Hindu-Catholic Theopoetics of Divine Absence (2013), and Learning Interreligiously: In the Text, in the World (2018).
