Happy New Year!
Hello Second Grade Families! I hope that your new year is off to a great start! As we start a new calendar year, we are closing in on second quarter. AR goals should be met by the end of the quarter, which is January 24th. We are so close to having the entire class meet their goals so please encourage your child to KEEP READING! As always, please remember to check your child's blue folder each night. It will usually contain important information as well as work that your child has completed. The only papers that should be coming back to school are those in the "Bring Back to School" pocket. Thank you so much for your assistance with this. Enjoy your long weekend!
Reading
This week we worked on reading non-fiction. This tends to be more challenging for students. We talked about the different text features of non-fiction. We also worked a lot on comprehension. Some topics discussed were seasons, New Year's celebrations around the world, and Komodo dragons. Ask your child what they read about.
Math
We are still pushing through Unit 2 which covers addition and subtraction. This unit is huge which is why it is taking some time to get through it all. This week we were reviewing writing numbers in expanded form. We also worked on finding the missing number in a subtraction problem (____-5=12 and 7-____=12). Please review this with your student over the weekend. Next week we will be taking our second facts assessment to close out the quarter. Please continue to work on math facts throughout the week. You may have noticed that some math homework came home this week. I will continue to send work home as extra practice is needed or if we do not finish something in class. Thank you for your attention to this.
Science
We are continuing our unit on Nutrition. This week we talked about the "Others'" group. Ask your child what this means. We also reviewed the five food groups and discussed the importance of each one. Next week we will talk about the difference between a snack and a meal. We will also discuss healthy snacks versus unhealthy snacks. This would be a great discussion to have at the dinner table!
