Prairie Lakes AEA offers Child MHFA

Prairie Lakes AEA is offering Child Mental Health First Aid agency wide throughout the 2020-2021 school year. This training focuses on children ages 5-12 and as well as youth. This six and one half hour training course is designed to teach adults how to help children who are experiencing a mental health challenge or are in crisis.


Child Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with children.


The Child MHFA trainings will be held throughout the year from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. agency wide. A 30 minute lunch break will be provided. Lunch will be on your own. There is no charge to participate. Class is limited to 30 participants.


This training also meets the Iowa legislation requirement of one hour of suicide prevention training for school districts.

How Child Mental Health First Aid Can Help

  • Informs adults about common mental health concerns among children
  • Reduces stigma
  • Teaches adults how to recognize signs and symptoms of mental health problems in children and youth
  • Teaches a 5 step action plan to help children and youth who may be facing a mental health problem or crisis
