Fulton Focus
For the parents and patrons of the Fulton School District
April 13, 2018
A message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents and Patrons,
Earlier this week two new members joined the Fulton Board of Education. Both new members, Mrs. Leah Williamson Baker and Mrs. Jackie Pritchett, have significant time as Fulton parents and volunteers. Both have demonstrated an interest in ensuring every child succeeds and ensuring excellence at all levels. The Board of Education members who are continuing are pictured below include Verdis Lee, President; Andy Borderer, Vice President; Emily Omohundro, Secretary; Todd Gray, Member; and Matt Gowin, Member. In addition to welcoming new members, we express our thanks to Dennis Depping for twelve years of Board Service and Kristi Donohue for six years of Board Service.
Our school year is rapidly winding down. Missouri Assessment Program testing begins Tuesday, April 17, 2018. Please review the MAP Testing information included in the Focus for pointers to help your student be successful on the upcoming assessments.
As the year ends, it is a time for numerous field trips and activities that parents may participate with their student(s). Be aware that all volunteers must complete a volunteer form, which includes a Division of Family Services background check. The link to the Volunteer form is included below or may be obtained from your student(s) building.
Thank you for sending great kids to work with!
Sincerely,
Jacque A. Cowherd, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Commonly Asked Questions on Background Checks
Application FAQs:
I filled one out last year. Do I still need to do this?
Applications are required on a yearly basis. Even if you filled one out last year, you will need to fill a new one out for the 2017-18 and again for the 2018-19 school year.
How long does it take to process my application?
Applications take 7 days to process, so the sooner you get yours filled out, the better! Please do not wait until a couple days before a field trip/class party to submit your application. Get it done now so the office does not have to turn you away on the day of the event.
Will I be notified once my application has been approved?
You will only be notified if something was flagged on the background check that prevents you from attending events during school hours. However, if you have questions, once you have waited the 7 days for processing time, you may call the child's school of attendance to verify that your application has been approved!
I have kids in multiple schools within the district. Do I need to fill one out for each school?
No. One application can be used district-wide!
Why do I need to fill out a background check?
The safety of our students is a top priority at Fulton Public Schools. We require background checks to ensure our students will be safe with any of our volunteers. If you have further questions about this matter, you may contact our Central Office (573) 590-8000.

MAP Testing
Below are the dates for State Testing for Fulton Public Schools.
***Missouri Assessment Program testing in Grades 3-8 begins Tuesday, April 17 (English Language Arts, Math, and in grades 5 and 8 Science)
***Missouri Assessment Program EOC (End of course) – Begins Tuesday, April 24 for high school students in Algebra I, Biology, English II, and Government
There are some ways in which you can enhance your child’s performance:
Do:
* Encourage your child to do his/her best.
* Make sure he/she gets proper rest and nutrition during the test dates.
* Have your child wear comfortable clothing.
* Protect your child from family pressures or problems if possible during testing.
Don’t:
* Forget that emphasis on test scores can be upsetting to children.
* Try to “cram” for the exam.
* Use undue threats or promises based on the outcome of his/her results.
* Judge your child on the basis of a test score. Many factors can influence test scores, and any test only tells part of the story.
