Cumberland Thursday Folder
February 22, 2024
Dear Cumberland Families,
One of the things we missed so much during the recent years when we could not gather was our Kids to Kids concerts; grade levels doing their performances during the school day in an all school assembly. We had the 2nd/3rd grade performances in an all school assembly on Tuesday and the student joy in both performing and being in the audience was palpable. All school events strengthen our school community and we are delighted to have them.
Our 100th day of school, coinciding with our Stars of Kindness made Monday very special at Cumberland. Classes celebrated their grade level's accomplishment of earning stars with 'bursts of stars' or Starbursts. Yesterday, we had a bit of a movie during lunch as the final celebration. We know that highlighting the behaviors we want makes them happen more and kindness is overflowing right now.
We know that our school responsibilities are to grow students academically and social-emotionally, as whole people, and it is my guess that your child/children's strongest school memories are memories of the non-routine or special events the evoke strong emotion. It may be an interesting conversation to have with your child, sharing your own memories and asking them about their strongest school remembrances. Whatever they remember, we are all in this ship together and are happy to be so!
Fifth grade has many privileges and opportunities reserved only for their grade. Student Council is one of these opportunities and more than 85% of fifth graders are in Student Council, all wanting to contribute to Cumberland in some way. One privilege fifth graders can earn is called Self Selected seating in the lunch room. Our standard seating is at tables, assigned by grade level, sometimes in assigned seats at that table. Self Selected seating for fifth graders means that students get to choose to sit at any fifth grade table. Fifth grade had this privilege yesterday and they did a beautiful job of being inclusive and respectful to all.
Planning for the 2024-25 school year is already underway. Accurate student numbers are important for sectioning and staffing decisions. Please contact John or Barb in the office if your child/children will not be returning to Cumberland next year. (John.levek@wfbschools.com or barb.fleming@wfbschools.com). Thanks.
Reminder, no school for students Friday, February 23rd and Monday, February 26th.
Warm regards,
Jayne Heffron and Rebecca Salomon
