BA Student Serves on the Dallas Youth Commission
While some teenagers obsess over selfies and the size of their Snapchat following, one DISD student has lived a life more real than most people could ever imagine. Mu Di is a refugee from Burma, also known as Myanmar, a country 8,500 miles away from Bryan Adams High School, in east Dallas.
For decades, its people have endured civil war and military rule. Ten years ago, her family came to Texas to escape violence, despite speaking no English. “There was war. Each year, there was a group of soldiers who came and burned all the houses, killed the women. Rapes. Took the men, killed the child," Di said. "They have no mercy, at all." What Mu Di has seen makes her a much different kind of high school junior. “A lot of students, they may think, 'Oh, I want to solve this problem,' or, 'this is a problem in the world,’" said Victoria Irvine, Di’s drama teacher. "But she is actually taking the steps to solve it."
One of those steps is pretty big. It’s called the Dallas Youth Commission. They are student leaders providing insight and advice to the Dallas City Council. Di never applied for this coveted spot. Instead, when Councilmember Mark Clayton met her at a community event, he was so impressed, he asked her to apply. “I was shocked,” Di said. “You meet people who are special, and she was just special,” Councilmember Clayton said
Di is interested in shining a light on human rights issues, domestic abuse, and, generally, making the world a better place.“I want to be that person where someone says, ‘Because of you, this wouldn’t happen,’” she said. If you’re having doubts about if we can still leave the world a better place than we found it, it may be because you haven’t yet met Mu Di.
