Suffield Elementary Newsletter
October 20, 2023
A message from the Principal - Mrs. Bookman
Dear Suffield Family,
Embracing the arrival of the fall season, we find ourselves with an array of exciting autumn activities. This weekend promises a variety of family-friendly experiences. We encourage you to check out the multitude of opportunities highlighted in today's newsletter and consider attending one of them. In particular, I look forward to meeting many of you at the Middle School's Fall Fest tomorrow!
In addition to these festivities, our school district has organized a special parent night set to take place this upcoming Tuesday. We cordially invite you to join us for this exclusive event designed for parents only, to be held at Field High School. This program, titled "Keeping Our Kids Safe," is not to be missed. Beginning at 5:00 PM, a complimentary dinner will be served to all parents, setting the stage for an informative and engaging series of presentations. These sessions are tailored to assist you as your child navigates the ever-evolving world of technology.
Even though your child may be at a young age, it's imperative to recognize the potential risks associated with technology use. We wholeheartedly urge you to consider participating in this event to gain valuable insights and guidance. Your presence would be greatly appreciated.
Stay dry this weekend!
Mrs. Bookman

Field Local Schools Renewal November 7, 2023
Know The Facts!
Field Schools has placed two issues on the November 7 ballot. The first is a 10.75 mill operating issue and 1 mill for permanent improvements. The second is a 7.3 mill operating issue. These issues were last passed in May of 2019 and are up for renewal. A levy renewal does not include any new millage.
Operating money pays for all aspects of the district. It pays for teachers, custodians, bus drivers, cafeteria staff, tutors, computers, textbooks, supplies, fuel, and food. That is not a complete list, but just part of what operating money pays for. The renewal of the operating issues will allow the continuation of district services and programs at current levels.
Permanent Improvement money is used for physical items/improvements with a lifespan of 5 years or more. Funds generated from passage of the Permanent Improvement levy five years ago were used to rebuild the parking lot on the main campus and fund building and grounds repairs and improvements. Going forward, permanent improvement money will be used to maintain and improve existing buildings, grounds and facilities.
Upcoming 3rd Grade testing
We want to inform our parents and guardians that our 3rd grade students will be taking the Ohio State Test in ELA - English Language Arts on October 24th and 25th. As we strive to create the best testing environment for our students, we kindly ask that you avoid scheduling any appointments for your child on these dates. Research shows that students perform better when taking the test on the designated testing day, rather than during a make-up session.
We appreciate your support in ensuring our students are well-prepared and ready to perform their best on these important assessments.
Families in Need
Planning for the holidays comes earlier and earlier each year! If any assistance is needed for your family this year, you can contact Mrs. Bookman no later than November 1st. Several area organizations often reach out to our school to help families, but if we are not aware of your need, assistance cannot be obtained. Please send a note to the office, or email Mrs. Bookman at shawn.bookman@fieldlocalschools.org if your family is looking for assistance for the holidays.
SCHEDULE YOUR FALL PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE NOW!
You can now schedule your child's fall conference online! You should have received a link from Mrs. Bookman via text message. If you haven't, please notify the office at 330-552-5252.

If the weather cooperates, we will all (K-5) parade outdoors and all are welcome to watch! Please remember that no costumes should feature blood, guts, or gore. Masks should not prohibit a student’s ability to see clearly. Teachers may ask for those to be removed if they are visually imparing or too gruesome. NO WEAPONS of any kind are permitted at school. No makeup should be worn to school, but may be put on at 1:30, room parents will help students if needed. Costumes should not be worn to school.
SUFFIELD TRICK OR TREAT SUNDAY, OCTOBER 29TH FROM 2:00 - 4:00 PM
Halloween Safety Tips
- Make sure your child’s costume is bright and reflective. It should fit well and be short enough to prevent tripping.
- Ensure costumes, wigs, and accessories carry a label indicating they are flame-resistant.
- Consider painting your child’s face instead of using a mask that can block peripheral vision.
- Feed your family a good meal prior to Halloween parties or trick-or-treating to discourage your kids from filling up on candy.
- If your kids are trick-or-treating in an area without sidewalks, walk on the edge of the road facing traffic.
- For evening trick-or-treating, add reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility. All kids or their parents should have a flashlight. Glow sticks are also great.
- After trick-or-treating, sort and check your kids’ goodies. Though tampering is rare, closely examine all treats – and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped, or suspicious items.
Help students Stay warm and toasty at recess
As the temperature drops and winter approaches, we want to ensure our students have a comfortable and enjoyable recess experience. That's why we're launching our 'Warm Hands, Happy Hearts' campaign. We're asking for donations of gloves or mittens to help keep all our students toasty and warm during recess.
With these gloves, our students can stay active, play games, and make the most of their outdoor time without worrying about chilly fingers. It's all part of our commitment to creating a safe and enjoyable learning environment for everyone.
Join us in spreading the warmth and joy! Let's make this winter season unforgettable for our students! Together, we can ensure that our students have a fantastic recess season.

Birthday Treats
At this time, we will allow Birthday Treats to be brought to school. We are required to inform you of the Healthy Eating Guidelines (see below) and suggest that you use this when selecting a treat. Whatever you choose, please note that all treats brought to school for the purpose of sharing with others, need to be prepackaged so we are able to know and see the ingredients list. There are many students who have a variety of food allergies and having the ingredients listed helps the school nurse determine if a student with allergies can eat a particular treat.
Student Medications
If you have medications that you need to have at school for your child, DO NOT send them to school with your child on the bus. Please bring them to school. The office is open from 8:00 am-4:00 pm. Please call the school if you have questions.
