Welcome Back to Principal Mike Leander who will Lead ACES!

On Friday, March 18th the appointment of Mike Leander as the Inaugural Principal to lead ACES was made public with a feature article in the Athol Daily News. Mr. Leander is a well known name to many in the community as a middle school English teacher of long standing, coach, and former principal of two years at the Royalston Community School. Your Opinion Matters! We want to know the early childhood needs in our community

Dear Families,

ARRSD was awarded a preschool expansion planning grant to explore the range of early childhood needs within the communities of Athol and Royalston. We hope to work with families and in collaboration with early childhood providers to offer a full continuum of options for families needing childcare and preschool.

Please take this survey or share with someone you know who has preschool aged children. The survey can also be accessed on our website at arrsd.org. Thank you!!

Early Childhood Fair

Share the word and plan to attend an Early Childhood Fair on Tuesday, March 29th from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at the Athol Royalston Middle School (ARMS). Find out more about early education and care opportunities within the community incuding public and private preschool, Home Based Visiting programs, and playgroups for infants and toddlers. The goal of the fair is to help match families with an appropriate early childhood setting that meets their needs.

Toy Bingo Family Night is a Big Hit

It was so nice to see over 70 people come out for our PTO sponsored toy bingo night. With each round of Bingo continuing until there were multiple winners drawn, every child in attendance went home with prizes! Thanks are due to our PTO members, Laura Robinson, Becky-Tower Hughes, Becky Lanoue, and Julie Hall for their efforts in making this event a success and to Barbara Franck, Pleasant Street teacher, who on behalf of our student council, spent the evening running our snack shop.

Teaching Strategies in ELA

Third and fourth grade students are learning strategies to not only approach their reading but also their constructed or written responses to read material. This is an essential skill for performing well on MCAS. Pictured is an anchor chart in fourth grade with some learned strategies.
  • pre-read
  • underline
  • highlight key words
  • Use sentence starters
  • Restate the question

MCAS is Scheduled to begin March 29th

Dear Families,

A letter was sent home with our third and fourth grade students on Friday detailing upcoming MCAS administration dates by grade as well as tips for families on helping your child do his or her best. If you have any questions about the MCAS administration please contact the school office. For more information and for sample test questions please visit the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education website.

Each day they choose one student from recess as the Catch of the Day who then receives a certificate, a stuffed fish for a day, and is entered into a weekly drawing in the "fish bowl" to receive a prize. Here are some recent catches!
