Notes from Principal Chapman
Dear LHS Families,
Happy Spring Equinox, Ramadan Kareem, (May Ramadan be generous to you), and Mubarak Nowruz (Happy Persian New Year) to all who celebrate this week! It’s been a nice change to have a few days of sunshine and relative warmth. The cherry blossoms are getting ready to bloom and there are sightings of NW Trillium on the forest trails. Keep your eyes open for these encouraging signs of spring.
I am excited to be chaperoning 90 Advanced Choir and Band students to Salzburg, Vienna and Prague for the long awaited 2023 Spring Break Trip. The trip was originally scheduled for March 2020 and we know what happened then. After four years of fundraising and planning we are looking forward to singing and playing at several concerts in Europe and learning more about the history of the area. The tour will include visits to Dachau and Terezin Memorials, Hellbrun Park’s Sound of Music Gazebo, Salzburg Cathedral, Mozart’s Birthplace, Fortress Hohensalzburg, St. Nikolaus Parish Church, Feuerkogelbahn (aerial tramway built in 1927 that runs from the town of ebensee to the summit of Feuerkogel mountain), Melk Abbey, the Vienna Residence Orchestra, Schoenbrunn Palace, House of Music-Vienna Philharmonic Section, Volksgarten, the Burgtheater at Josef-Meinrad-Platz, and a visit to the grave sites and memorials for Beethoven, Strauss, Brahms, Schubert, and Mozart, Prague Old Town and Castle District, and Lobkowicz Palace. Thank you to all of our chaperones, sponsors, donors, and families for making this trip possible despite the Covid long delay. Our performing arts students spend hours, months, and years practicing and performing. We are excited they will be able to apply and extend their learning over the break. Music can change the World!
We recommend time with family, friends, good books (Lori Lieberman and Anita Agudelo have great recommendations so stop by the Library before school tomorrow), long walks and hikes, baking/cooking favorite recipes, volunteering, time with pets, family movie and game nights, and lots of down time and sleep for everyone who will be rejuvenating here in Portland. Staycations can be the very best! We also know sometimes vacations can be stressful and we have listed resources below for any emergencies. Please check in on friends and look out for each other.
Safe travels to all who will be traveling over break including the LHS Baseball team who will be in sunny and dry Arizona for Spring Training. We look forward to seeing everyone back safely in April.
Go Cards!

Our PIL Champion Dance Team ended the season with a well deserved 4th place in the 6A Jazz competition! Congratulations to all of our Cardinal Dancers, coaches, and families. So much hard work went into this season and it paid off with a great finish!
Baseball got a great start to the season with a 2-0 record, taking down Corvallis and Sherwood - both teams that performed well in last year’s playoffs. They are headed to Arizona over Spring Break to play in the Coach Bob Invitational! Players have been working concessions and tickets all Winter season at basketball games in order to fundraise their way to Arizona and their hard work paid off. They will take on 5A Redmond, and three out of state teams over break. Good luck to our baseball team, and thanks for all of the help this year at games!
Softball is off to its best start in over 10 years, opening the season 4-0 on the road. The softball team has 3 different pitchers that have wins - all sophomores. Ella Spangler (2-0), Sofia Payne (1-0), Naia Rogers (1-0) have been key players. This is the first time Cardinal softball has had 3 different pitchers with wins since 2018! The Cards have been led at the plate by senior SS Hailey Cordry (.667 batting average, 3 triples, 8 runs scored, 5 RBIs and 7 stolen bases), and sophomore INF Delaney Qualls (.500 batting average 1 triple and 1 HR, 12 RBIs and 5 stolen bases).
Before tonight’s games across the state, Lincoln softball has scored the most runs in the 6A classification with 70 and are currently ranked #19! They play two games before break, 3/23 @ Nelson at 5pm, and 3/24 vs Beaverton at Hamilton Park at 5pm.
You can vote for Hailey Cordry for Softball Player of the Week here:
Lincoln Track and Field had a very successful first meet against Ida B Wells HS in the Battle of the Birds. We had 129 athletes compete with 13 top 10 performances in the state. Nikki Prall led the way in the state in the Girls Pole Vault. Coaches are particularly impressed with the large majority of the newcomers who were excellent, not only from a performance perspective, but also by being great teammates and running around and cheering for everybody! They look forward to building on this momentum as they head into Spring Break and gear up for the PIL JV Invitational and the PIL Varsity Relays where Cardinals will look to break the All-Time State Record in the Girls 4x800.
Golf has had a strong start to the season on both sides as well. Girls have recruited many players that are brand new to golf this year and have tripled their team size! They have started practice tournaments before their qualifying matches begin after Spring Break, completing 4 out of 10 tournaments this season! They are excited for a year of huge growth and team unity! Boys have had a strong start, also recruiting some new players this year! They competed last week and finished 3rd out of 20 teams from around the state in their first invitational of the year! They start PIL play on 3/23 and are looking toward a great season.
Tennis is looking to make a great run again this year on both sides. Boys are starting with a 4-0 record; 7-1 vs Barlow and again vs Crescent Valley, 5-3 @ Sprague, and most recently 8-0 vs Tualatin! They are hosting La Salle at Lewis and Clark at 4pm on 3/23, and will play their final pre-season match on 3/24 vs Clackamas! Girls have competed tough and most recently tied against Sprague on 3/20. They will compete at La Salle on 3/23, and @ Clackamas on 3/24 to close out the pre-season as well. Good luck to all of our Tennis Cards!
Lacrosse is starting strong on both the boys and girls sides. Boys Varsity started 2-0, including a 4th quarter comeback vs Mountainside to take the win 10-8! The JV team also took home a 5-3 win against Mountainside, making the whole program 3-0 so far this season! Boys play Canby on 3/23 and then begin league play after Spring Break. Girls have had a strong start as well, winning their season opener at Sunset 21-5! There are 19 freshman this year that make up over half of the program. Two weeks ago, both teams had a great showing at the OGLA Jamboree which was the first time that a lot of the athletes have played in a lacrosse game. They came back to host their first home game against Jesuit, narrowly losing 14-15. It was a great game with some amazing plays - and they are excited about the potential that’s showing in the beginning of the season against great teams! Eva Thomsen Marr scored 9 goals, and Hannah Robertson had a whopping 18 saves! Go Cards!
LHS Oregon Rowing Unlimited athletes kicked off their Spring season with a second-place overall team finish at the Burton Beach Invitational on Vashon Island, Washington on March 19. Their commitment to working hard on land through the winter months is paying off and we cannot wait to see how far they take it this season! In the men's U19 coxed four event congratulations go out to senior Gabriel Schoewe and junior Lucas Andersen with a fourth-place finish together, and to sophomore Ezra Pero with a seventh-place finish. In the men's U19 pair, Lucas Andersen brought home a silver medal for ORU while Gabriel Schoewe pulled in fifth in this challenging event. Junior Chloe Kitchin brought home third place in the women's novice quad, while sophomore Ezra Pero won second place in the men's U17 quad. Freshman Anina Schoenen won first-place gold in the womens U16 double and second place in the womens U16 quad. Way to kick off the Spring Season, LHS rowers!

Grad Party Help Needed!
We need your help the evening of Sunday, June 4th.
You could really help us loading students on the busses at LHS and at the venue with set-up. This will allow the senior parents to fully attend their student’s graduation ceremony. Plus, you will then be fully plugged in and perhaps consider helping to prepare the event for next year?
Interested? Must be available Sunday June 4th between 5-8 or 8-11pm? Please email the committee at: gradpartylhs@gmail.com Thank you!
Earthquake Relief for Turkey and Syria
Students and Parents of Lincoln,
As some of you might know, two massive 7.8 scale earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria in early February. Thousands of homes were destroyed, around 30,000 people were confirmed dead - A number that we suspect will continue to rise - and thousands more are homeless out in the cold.
For those of you who want to donate, but don't know how, Here is how you can:
1. Please donate to the Oregon Turkish American Association (ORTA)'s earthquake relief campaign. ORTA is a non profit organization that passes all the donations directly to the local effective charities through Bridge to Turkiye Fund. Donations made to ORTA are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by IRS Internal Revenue Code 501(c)3.
