Classroom Happenings
This will be a short and busy week for us. Monday will be the only day that we follow our regular schedule. After that we will be taking Health Ed. classes, competing in the Orca Olympics, if your student is a 6th grader they will be signing up for 7th grade classes, and we will have an Early Release day on Wednesday. Boy, that’s a lot to do!
On top of this we will continue to learn about pollution. Students will perform hard water tests on three different sources. Students will discover how minerals in water can contribute indirectly to pollution by increasing the hardness of the water and subsequently the amount of soap and detergent that people use.
This week we will begin wrapping up our Writing on Demand unit. This has been wonderful to teach and I students have really walked away with a lot of knowledge. Sixth grade students will continue working on White Fang and 5th grade students will be finishing their final projects on A Wrinkle in Time.
Hallo Bay Bears
5th and 6th grade teachers will be taking students to see a Disney movie about the Hallo Bay Bears on April 29th at 9:30am. THis should be a really fun experience. It will however cost: $5.00 per student. This $5 includes the movie, a small popcorn and a small drink.
If you are unable to pay the $5.00 please contact me as soon as possible.
6th Grade ONLY
On Wednesday-Thursday, May 7-8, West Homer Elementary sixth grade students will be going to the Challenger Center in Kenai for two days of programming including a robotics workshop and the Encounter Earth simulated mission. We will spend the night in the dorms at Challenger Center after going to Nikiski Pool and Water Slide. On Thursday we will travel to Cooper Landing for a Kenai River Rafting Trip with Alaska Rivers Company and a return to Homer by around 6:30 p.m.
We will eat all meals, other than lunch on Thursday, at the Challenger Center, and special thanks goes out to our Chef Don Cotogno of Timber Bay B and B, who, along with his wife,(famously known as Mrs. C. here at WHE), have volunteered to prepare meals for the past several years.
Transportation will be provided by school bus with departure at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday and return by 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Students will need to bring their overnight gear with them on Wednesday morning. A fee of between $50 and $75 will need to be collected from each student to help defray trip costs. Results of our present fundraiser will have some bearing on the final amount. This will cover all meal costs, so students will not need to bring food with them. We will ask parents to send in snacks for everyone to share on the bus, etc. Both Mrs. Brass and Mr. Young applied and received a grant to fund the Encounter Earth Missions. A permission slip will be sent home on April 21 with all finalized trip details.
Last week, we launched our second fundraiser, a Scentsy sale, to support field trip costs. Students will have until April 15 to complete their sales and earn prizes for themselves as well as raise funds for the sixth grade. If you have any questions about this, please contact your student’s classroom teacher or Joy Huffman directly.
As in any fundraiser of this nature, we encourage strong parental guidance. Students are encouraged to sell only to neighbors and friends with whom they are already acquainted. Many families have Dad or Mom take the catalog to work, etc. Thanks for your continued support and cooperation!
Sincerely, The Sixth Grade Staff
