Patrick Marsh Middle School Band

This Week in Band at PMMS (Sept 19-23, 2016)

The First To Find Out....

Last week Thursday I had the honor of being presented the Middle School Teacher of the Year award by Dr. Tony Evers (Wisconsin State Superintendent of Public Instruction) during the State of Education Address at the capitol. The next day the four Teachers of the Year (Elementary, Middle School, High School and Special Services) interviewed to become the overall state representative and nominee for the National Teacher of the Year. I'm happy to tell you that I was selected as the representative! This means a trip to Washington DC in April to meet the President, trip to Space Camp, and other neat adventures. This hasn't gone public yet, but I wanted you to know first. The official press release will probably take place on Monday. Thank you for the kind words and the encouragement.

The Band Lesson Academy will begin Thursday, Sept 29.

Only 3 flute spots and 3 horn spots remain. However, if you are still interested in taking private lessons don't despair! Don't forget, regardless of what school you take private lessons at you will first need to fill out the online form found on the website.

HOW TO SIGN-UP? To sign-up for lessons, please register on the main Band Lesson Academy page ( Once you have completed this Mr. Gleason or the private lesson teacher will contact you to set up a specific lesson time.

UWEC Trip - More Chaperones Needed!

I still have room on the bus if you would like to join us on the 7th Band UWEC Trip! I would love to get at least four more parents to come along. It will be a really fun day and we are taking nice buses. Just fill out this form if interested:

How Much Should My Child Practice?

This week in all of the bands I will present "Meet Myelin Your New Best Friend" to the 6th and 7th grade bands. In this presentation I will talk to your kids about the concept of "talent" and we control more of what appears to be talent than we realize. I will show they WHY practice is important and HOW to practice based on research and science.

Rather than bore you with a long explanation in writing, I created a video that basically goes through what we will discuss in class. I hope that you find it interesting and useful...especially when discussing practice with your young musician. The video is about 10 minutes long. Thanks for taking time to watch it this week!

7th Band Trip to UWEC - Oct 6

What? 7th Band Trip to UW-Eau Claire

When? Thursday, Oct 6, 2016 (7:40 AM to 8:30 PM)

Why? There are many goals for this trip:

  1. To learn how to travel as a group representing our district, school, and band program.

  2. To receive feedback from two of the state’s leading collegiate music educators.

  3. To work with and listen to talented collegiate musicians both in sectionals and in the full ensemble allowing us to grow in “sound” and “musicianship”.

Uniform? We will wear our band uniform all day. Black band shirt, black pants, socks and shoes.

Trip Cost? $12 (Coach bus) Cash or checks (payable to “PMMS”) to Mr. Gleason by Thur, Sept 29. **Please note - students will also need money for a fast food dinner at Oakwood Mall.

Lunch? We will eat lunch at the beautiful Carson Park in Eau Claire. Students will have the option of bringing their own sack lunch or requesting a school box lunch if they typically get school hot lunch. ALL 7th band students need to “register” their lunch option online by Thur, Sept 29 (even if they are bringing their own lunch): Students with other special dietary restrictions should note that on the online form.

Dinner? We will eat at the Oakwood Mall Food Court for dinner. The food court has the following options:

Dairy Queen, Charley’s Philly Steaks, Dhimiters (Gyros), Kobe’s Japanese, Melts and Cheese, Orange Julius, Rocky Rococo, Stir Fry 88, Subway, and Taco Johns. Your child could also bring a sack “dinner” if they would prefer that.

Chaperones? Mrs. Haraldson, Mr. Luessman, Mr. Leising (student teacher) and I will be attending this trip, but we need 7 or 8 parent/guardian chaperones. I’m also looking for one parent willing to drive and follow the bus (in case we have a sick child, etc). If interested in chaperoning, fill out this online form:

Other? Wi-fi will be available on the bus. Phones and personal electronic devices will be allowed on the trip, however the device is the student’s responsibility. Use of the device during our time on the UWEC campus is strictly prohibited. The only spending money needed on this trip is for the student’s dinner. Instruments and music should be clearly labeled with the student’s name.
