Dolphins are mammals. They are very playful. There are more than 40 different species of dolphins.
Delicious Food
Dolphins usually hunt fish and swallow them whole! And, sometimes, they eat squid.
Scary Predators
Orcas (or Killer Whales) are so big that they attack and eat dolphins!
Size
A dolphins size can vary between 8.5 ft to at least 13 ft long!!!
Senses
Dolphins can whistle and snap their jaws shut to communicate. They have their own, unique whistle. They clap their jaws to keep others away. They also have echolocation to hunt, just like bats!
Pods: Dolphin Groups
Dolphins live in groups called "Pods". You usually don't see a dolphin alone!
Dolphin Babies
A dolphin baby is born in shallow waters near the surface. They are always born tails first. The baby has no air in itself at birth. But it's mother guide it to the surface to take it's first breath.
Their Real Identity
Dolphins are really small toothed whales.
Identifying Dolphins
You can identify dolphins by looking at their size, shape, and color. A dolphin people usually think of is a Bottlenose dolphin. There are also many more!
