Researchers use a variety of published statisics and nonpublic agency records.

Agency records do not require direct interaction with research subjects.

A large amount of criminal justice research uses data collected by state and local agencies. Some of those include: police, criminal courts, probation officers, juvenile authorities, and corrections departments.

Information collected often falls under three categories:
