Rykers Ridge Learning Commons

Super September!

There has been a lot happening in the Learning Commons! Internet Safety, Student Self Checkout, Learning Commons procedures, and Dot Day! All classes and teachers have had an introduction on how to use the Destiny system and scanner to self checkout. Yes, it's true. The students are going to begin checking out their own books.

Happy Fall Everyone!

Book Checkout - The How

Mrs. Schmitt prints out barcode labels for every student in the school and sticks them on different colored construction paper.

A box with all these cards, separated by homeroom teacher, is kept at the circulation desk. The students will come in with their books, check that the Destiny tab is set to Check-In and begin scanning.

When the students are ready to check out, they come up to the circulation desk, scan their card, then scan their books. The Destiny system shows students' names and photo after they have scanned their cards.

The re-shelving of books is a huge task... 2 books x 250 kids = a whole lot of books coming and going every week.

Another benefit is that the teachers will be able to really see what the students are checking out and help them make good choices. :o)

Dot Day!

Rykers' Ridge loves celebrating DOT DAY each year! The official Dot Day is on September 15(ish)...we celebrated 3 weeks long this year! Students created 3D (Augmented Reality) dots, digital dots, talking dots, and the culminating activity was a Gumdrop Challenge! Their materials: toothpicks and candy Gumdrops.

K-2 challenge was to build the tallest free standing structure.

Third - fifth challenge was to build a structure, with a set number of toothpicks and gumdrops, that would support the weight of a book.

Oh yeah, stickiness was involved and the kids wanted to eat them.

Welcome to the Rykers Ridge Elementary Learning Commons; formally known as the Library Media Center. Today’s Learning Commons is designed to serve all members of the Rykers Ridge community and is very different than the library you or I may have experienced during our schooldays. Students will still visit the Learning Commons to gather reading and research materials, however, the environment and the way our students use the library has changed in many ways. We want to create a space that really fosters student engagement, allow students to think critically and problem solve. The library has always been the place to go for great resources, but now it is officially a center for learning and creating.

There will be changing activities placed around the library with the intention of igniting curiosity, creativity and innovation. Using both high and low-tech materials, and, sometimes no tech at all.

But don't worry! Rykers Ridge Library is still the place to go for great books! We will have a whole shipment of new books for you to check out, soon.

As you get better acquainted with the Destiny catalog system, it will knock your socks off! You will have access to the library with the click of a button. How's that for 24-hour library access?

About Us

Our goals are to:

  • Get students excited about the library space and learning.
  • Give students opportunities to work on engaging tasks.
  • Provide spaces to work collaboratively, think critically, and creatively.

Also, to transition to a place where students DO stuff, not simply a place where students GET stuff.
