News for Grade 2 Arabic
الاهداف الصفية Class Goals
Class Goals: Our biggest goal in the Arabic classroom is for the students to enjoy learning Arabic as much as they enjoy other subjects. We also want the students to think of Arabic as a practical language, not a language that is used solely in the Arabic classroom. We want our children to be enthusiastic about learning Arabic and inquire in ways that enhances their fluency. It is crucial for the parents to encourage their children to engage in the language whether by talking to them in Arabic (Arabic spoken at home) or to encourage them to talk and share information about what is going on in the classroom (Arabic is not spoken at home.)
Students' Goals: Students were asked to write at least one goal they would like to accomplish in the Arabic classroom to develop a sense of ownership and to increase their excitement for learning Arabic. Later, we combined those goals and designed a document that is posted in the Arabic classroom.
The goals are as follow:
- Learn new words
- Learn how to write
- Learn how to read-- reading the Qur'an
- Understand and speak

Assessment: We must assess each student thoroughly in order for us to be able to address his/her need. The assessment phase will be over by the end of this week inshallah. Please keep in mind that the focus in the Arabic classroom is on students' fluency in the language and not their grade level.
Classwork: While we are focusing on assessment, we are introducing the following in class:
- Reading and memorizing the letter stories: Story of Letter Alif and B’a والباء حكاية حرف الالف
- Speaking: Practicing the greetings, asking what one name is and asking how one is doing
السلام عليكم وعليكم السلام، مرحبا، اهلاً وسهلاً
...ما اسمك؟ اسمي
كيف حالكَ، كيف حالكِ
انا بخير الحمد لله
- Writing and vocabulary: Writing the names of different Animals and colors (taken from the letter stories.)
Below is a list of colors and words we have been practicing thus far:

Classwork vs homework الواجب المنزلي ازاء الواجب الصفي
In the Arabic classroom, we focus on classwork rather than homework. Students will have some homework at times that is not designed to overwhelm them (i.e. listening to a song, watching a short clip, or reading a short story.) The goal is to work collaboratively with the students in class to enhance their language skills. First, we work on new information introduced in the class as a group then the students are divided into small groups to work on specific language skills assigned that day such as writing, new words, or reading with their peers.
